You know how every kid has that ONE book they absolutely love (whether it's for a stage of their childhood or the whole thing) and have to hear it every single night? This is that book for my daughter. My daughter is 13 months old and she loves books. I purchased this because it's a board book and she can turn the pages. I had no idea she was going to love it so much, but she does. The story is cute, so we don't mind reading it (a million times) and it's just long enough for her age. My husband and I even have most of the words memorized. I absolutely recommend this book!!
This version is missing at least 4 pages from the original classic; "Hello Jack. Hello, Jake. Shake hands. Shake hands. Shake, shake, shake." It is also missing the pages about the handkerchief. I know it's a board book, but you just shouldn't condense this classic in my opinion.
I bought this book for my granddaughter when she was six months old. Her mother/my daughter is a musician (drummer and guitarist) and played throughout her pregnancy. This has obviously affected our sweet baby girl, because she is especially enthralled with things that have a cadence. This book is her absolute FAVORITE for that reason, as well as the funny monkeys. She will sit and "read" the book to herself--flipping the pages back and forth--and also takes it to adults to read. When they say "the end" she makes a sad face and they read it again:-) It makes my heart happy that she enjoys reading so much. Brown Bear, Brown Bear is her second favorite book so far.
I know many commenters don't like the abridged versions of Dr. Suess board books, but this book is super fun to read and my 16 month old loves it. It's a good length for this age, introduces him to the stories, and will allow me to bring in the fuller length books when he's older and has more of an attention span/won't rip the pages.
Be aware that the board book (and possibly others post 1980s) is missing two spreads- "Hello Jake, Hello Jack. Shake hands, shake hands, whack whack whack!" and "Goodbye Jack, Goodbye Jake. etc"This was one of my favorite spreads because I say it all the time! I had to buy another version, pre 1980s.
She loves monkeys, apes and primates of all kinds, I ordered the hardback based on other reviews which stated the board book edition had been abridged. She loves the repetition of the text and is beginning to memorize it even after only a few readings. Toddlers love repetition and she is no exception.
We always give "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" to our friends who have recently had a new baby. The cadence is, from our experience, much appreciated by pre-readers and is a great book for them to learn to read. Al Perkins is a genius for writing this excellent attention-holder that parents will never tire of reading. From our kid's fascination with this they easily went on to more complex books. I recommend this for pre-readers (to be read to) and early readers without any reservations.
This is such a cute book, I had it for my kids when they were young so I recently also purchased it for my youngest grandson. I was a little surprised it's physically a small book but that's my own fault because I didn't read the description close enough to see that. It's made with thick cardboard pages & will hold up nicely, and in this case, size really doesn't matter.
Love this book.. I have read it many times to my children, and now grandchildren. Also as a teacher in primary classrooms. Love the rhythm, illustrations, and humor.
