This is the best gardening book I've found for my area. I live in North Central Arkansas and it is HOT and HUMID here but we can go weeks in the summer without rain. I grew up in Galveston, Texas and was shocked to move here 37 years ago and find temperatures over 100 degrees! I thought those were Death Valley Temperatures. In Texas we always had a wonderful garden, here we have limped along trying to have a half way decent garden with NO success. I have bought numerous books I have picked the brains of local gardeners or tried to. This is a poor area and people are not generous with anything and suspicious if you are. When I started reading this book it was like my Mom was still with us and right at my elbow telling me what to do and why. The best part of this book is the monthly section on what to do each month. you can garden almost all year so there is plenty to do. And she has the climate divided into five separate climate sections that for our area are right on. To be honest I was so pleased to see that someone really knew my problems I called Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and told them to tell her THANK YOU! AND I took my many gardening books to the Free Shelf at my local library. This is all I have now and all I want. If you live in the Southeast you cannot buy a better gardening book for this area. Contrary to what most garden book writers think we don't all have a mild summer climate, you can't grow corn and lettuce at the same time here.
This book is fantastic! I am an experience gardener, living in the Southeast, and I SO wish I'd had this book 20 years ago! So many gardening books are written for people living in other climates. It was so wonderful to finally find a book that deals with what *I* struggle with trying to garden here in our beloved hot & humid Southeast!The first chapters on Gardening were very helpful - much of it was good, basic information that I already knew; but I still learned a lot that will help me in my garden. I think that reading these chapters will definitely help me improve in several areas.Then the "month by month" section in the middle that goes through exactly what to do each month - that is *priceless*! I'm so excited to have this information just written down plainly for me, without me having to try to adjust for my zone in my head and translate instructions meant for those in the Midwest into what I should do here down South.... this is incredibly helpful!I also loved the end section with specific information on each different plant and how it does in our area. This was extremely helpful as well.This book is excellent - well written, fun to read, and jam packed with helpful information. Well worth the money!
Historically, the majority of books that have been written about gardening have been written by gardeners from the northern U.S., and reflect gardening practices from that region. It's only been in the last couple of decades that books oriented towards gardening and lawn maintenance in the south have been published in significant numbers.This book is written by a southern gardener, and reflects well the fact in much of the south, it's possible to grow vegetables of some type year round. For this reason, through careful planning, southern gardeners can design and plant their gardens to allow them to harvest fresh vegetable for their dinner table year round. Ms. Wallace does an excellent job guiding her readers through the necessary steps to be successful in making their garden as productive as possible throughout the year.The book is divided into three major sections. The first addresses overall gardening considerations for southern gardeners. The second section gives a detailed month-by-month guide on planting, harvesting, planning, and other activities. And the final section provides detailed information of the different plants and how to plant, grow and harvest them. It even gives tips on using in meals.Ms. Wallace, who is heavily involved in an heirloom seed program, also provides guidance on how to plant your garden so that you can save your own heirloom seeds.My only cautions for this book are:1. It's oriented more towards row gardening found in larger gardens, rather than small raised bed gardens that are more common in urban environments.2. If you're planning a small garden, and don't want to spend large amounts of time gardening, all of the detail can be intimidating. So be careful to take only what you need from this book, and don't feel forced to follow all of the monthly directions provided in the book.Thanks to Ms. Wallace for writing a very useful and delightful book!!
Love this book! We had the Northeast version already but due to moving from NJ to TN, we wanted to get the appropriate book. This is really a fool-proof guide to gardening. It really doesn't get much simpler--you just flip to the month it currently is, and it tells you literally everything you need to know. For example, if it's time to plant potatoes but harvest something else, it tells you. Definitely beginner friendly. If you want to start growing something but aren't sure what kind of timeline you need to follow with the planting, caring, and harvesting of something, this is the book for you
