Today’s most visionary thinkers reveal the cutting-edge scientific ideas and breakthroughs you must understand.Scientific developments radically change and enlighten our understanding of the world—whether it’s advances in technology and medical research or the latest revelations of neuroscience, psychology, physics, economics, anthropology, climatology, or genetics. And yet amid the flood of information today, it’s often difficult to recognize the truly revolutionary new ideas that will have lasting impact. In the spirit of identifying the most significant new theories and discoveries, John Brockman, publisher of Edge.org (“The world’s smartest website”—The Guardian), asked 198 of the finest minds What do you consider the most interesting recent scientific news? And what makes it important?  Pulitzer Prize—winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel JARED DIAMOND on the best way to understand complex problems • author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics CARLO ROVELLI on the mystery of black holes • Harvard psychologist STEVEN PINKER on the quantification of human progress • TED Talks curator CHRIS J. ANDERSON on the growth of the global brain • Harvard cosmologist LISA RANDALL on the true measure of breakthrough discoveries • Nobel Prize—winning physicist FRANK WILCZEK on why the twenty-first century will be shaped by our mastery of the laws of matter • philosopher REBECCA NEWBERGER GOLDSTEIN on the underestimation of female genius • music legend PETER GABRIEL on tearing down the barriers between imagination and reality • Princeton physicist FREEMAN DYSON on the surprising ability of small (and cheap) upstarts to compete with billion-dollar projects. Know This: Today’s Most Interesting and Important Scientific Ideas, Discoveries, and Developments (Edge Question) by John Brockman“Know This” is a thought-provoking book of essays brought to you by the by The Edge that provides readers with better tools to think about the world. The Edge is an organization that presents original ideas by today's leading thinkers from a wide spectrum of scientific fields. The 2017 Edge question is, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?” This interesting thorough 608-page book includes 198 essays from the brightest minds. For my sake, I created a spreadsheet of all the essays and graded them from zero to five stars based on quality. Five star essays are those that provide a great description of the author's favorite scientific concept. On the other hand, those receiving a one or even a zero represent essays that were not worthy of this book. Of course, this is just one reviewer's personal opinion. I basically reprised the same formula I used to review, "This Explains Everything" and “This Will Make You Smarter”.Positives:1. This series by "The Edge" always deliver a high-quality product.2. A great topic, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?”3. A great range of scientific essays provided by subject matter experts.4. There were a number of outstanding essays deserving of five stars for me. I will list my favorites as positives in this review. In order of appearance, the first by Steven Pinker, “Human Progress Quantified”. Makes the compelling case that the world is actually getting better. “Human intuition is a notoriously poor guide to reality.”5. Richard Muller’s “The Greatest Environmental Disaster”. “Someday global warming may become the primary threat. But it is air pollution that is killing people now. Air pollution is the greatest environmental disaster in the world today.”6. Donald D. Hoffman’s “The Abdication of Spacetime”. “Nathan Seiberg, of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, said, “I am almost certain that space and time are illusions. These are primitive notions that will be replaced by something more sophisticated.”7. Seth Lloyd’s “One Hundred Years of Failure”. “Encouragingly, the advances in quantum gravity supplied by quantum-information theory do not yet seem to be counterbalanced by backsliding elsewhere.”8. Brian G. Keating’s “Looking Where the Light Isn’t”. Excellent essay. “The next century of general relativity promises to be as exciting as the first. “Spacetime tells matter how to move; matter tells spacetime how to curve,” said John Archibald Wheeler. We’ve seen what the curvature is. Now we just need to find out what’s the matter. And where better to look for lost matter than where the dark is.”9. Neil Turok’s “Simplicity”. “Such a theory won’t be concerned with kilograms, meters, or seconds, only with information and its relations. It will be a unified theory not only of all the forces and particles but also of the universe as a whole.”10. Steve Giddings’s “New Probes of Einstein’s Curved Spacetime—and Beyond?”. “The community has been abuzz about the possible discovery of a new particle at the LHC, seen by its disintegration into pairs of photons. If this is real and not just a fluctuation, there’s a slim chance it is a graviton in extra dimensions, which, if true, could well be the discovery of the century.”11. Rudy Rucker’s “The Universe Is Infinite”. “Many cosmologists now think our spatial universe is infinite.”12. Gregory Benford’s “Pluto Now, Then on to 550 AU”. “New Horizons is important not just for completing our first look at every major world in the solar system. It points outward, to a great theater in the sky, where the worlds of the galaxy itself are on display.”13. “Scott Aaronson’s “How Widely Should We Draw The Circle?” “By letting us simulate quantum physics and chemistry, quantum computers might spark a renaissance in materials science, and allow (for example) the design of higher-efficiency solar panels.”14. John Tooby’s “The Race Between Genetic Meltdown and Germline Engineering” “Natural selection is the only physical process that pushes species’ designs uphill—against entropy, toward greater order (positive selection)—or maintains our favorable genes against the downward pull exerted by mutation pressure (purifying selection).”15. Eric Topol’s “The 6 Billion Letters of Our Genome”. “So the biggest breakthrough in genomics—Science’s 2015 Breakthrough of the Year—is the ability to edit a genome, via so-called CRISPR technology, with remarkable precision and efficiency.”16. Juan Eriquez’s “Life Diverging”. “Thus the biggest story of the next few centuries will be how we begin to redesign life-forms, spread new ones, develop approaches and knowledge to further push the boundaries of what lives where.”17. Thalia Wheatley’s “Biology Versus Choice”. “the emergence of perhaps the greatest developing news story: the widespread understanding that human thought and behavior are the products of biological processes.”18. Gino Segre’s “Diversity in Science”. “Science has become increasingly collaborative in a way that makes diversity a paramount necessity.”19. David G. Myers’s “We Fear the Wrong Things”. “The hijacking of our rationality by fears of terrorist guns highlights an important and enduring piece of scientific news: We often fear the wrong things.”20. Oliver Scott Curry’s “Morality Is Made of Meat”. “Morality is natural, not supernatural. We are good because we want to be, and because we are sensitive to the opinions—the praise and the punishment—of others. We can work out for ourselves how best to promote the common good, and with the help of science make the world a better place.”21. Christian Keysers’s “Optogenetics”. “For the first time, we can selectively re-create arbitrary states in the brain—and hence the mind.”Negatives:1. At over 600 pages, it will require an investment of your time.2. Some essays were not worthy of this book. That said, the series has improved and there were very few lemons.3. Lacks visual material to complement the excellent narrative. In summary, I’m a big fan of The Edge. I enjoy essays from great minds covering a wide variety of topics and this one doesn’t disappoint. This has close to 200 essays and it never fails to be provocative and inspirational. The search for knowledge is a fun and satisfying pursuit. Pick up this book and enjoy the ride.Further recommendations: “This Explains Everything: Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works" and “This Will Make You Smarter” by John Brockman, "A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss, "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution" by Richard Dawkins, "The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements" by Sam Kean, "The Tell-Tale Brain: A Neuroscientist's Quest for What Makes Us Human" by V.S. Ramachandran, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies" by Michael Shermer, "How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed" by Ray Kurzwell, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond, "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry A. Coyne, and "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior" by Leonard Mlodinow.

Deep and interesting concepts explained in less than two pages. However, most the time you need a few (many) more pages to do a topic justice. This read more like a quick encyclopedia entry. However, sometimes the full explanation wasn't there and it was more like the author's opinion on a concept. I think the book would better if it took on less concepts (there are dozens) and let the authors take 4-10 pages so it didn't come off as a sophomoric.

A collection of very short essays - enough, in some cases, to whet your appetite - but not much depth or substance. Might be good as an introduction for people who do not follow science at all.

This is the best compilation of essays from some of the worlds most renowned scientists and researchers in the fields of science and technology I have read. If you are looking for a primer on the most current news in the physical and natural sciences, psychology and human behavior, look no further. This is a must read and the best place to start before taking a deeper dive into whatever area or discipline you’re interested in. Definitely 5 stars.

Another great compilation from Brockman!

Fantastic collection of essays by some of the best in the field!

good read

Though of short essays, the range of topics is broad in scope and, mostly, surprisingly interesting.

I purchased this book for primary teachers for use in their classrooms, and not necessarily for teaching about dinosaurs. It seemed to be equally as suited to an examination of the nature of science and how scientists "operate". Every page holds opportunities to describe how scientific ideas change as new information is gathered, and to stress that being "wrong" is a normal part of scientific discovery. Teachers can also ask students to point out the evidence that scientists used to modify early theories about dinosaurs. It can be emphasized that although the author uses the term "guess" several times, coming to conclusions based on observations is not guessing, and that modifying ideas after gathering additional data is acceptable and desirable.

cute book. good quality.

my students love this book

The students have really learned a lot from this book

This book was for my 6 year old grandson, who LOVES dinosaurs. I was intrigued by the description, as I want him to read, but to also not take everything he reads as being a fact. This book got him to thinking about what he has been told about dinosaurs and that we still have a lot to learn. Excellent book.

Grandson (5) LOVES this book!

This book is an awesome look at how scientific thinking changes over time. It was on the NSTA trade books top 100 list. My 8th grade students found it entertaining but it would be appropriate for much younger children.

Great book for my kids

Review

"In her debut book, Not My Buddy, Berkowitz invites readers to join her on a whodunit medical mystery, sharing her five-year journey of self-discovery as she fights her way back to health after contracting Giardia from her golden retriever, Buddy, for whom the book is titled."Berkowitz writes in a style so endearing that readers will feel as though they are one of her inner circle and candidly shares the intimate and escalating struggles she and her family encounter in the face of her rapidly declining health."Berkowitz's take-charge mentality when it comes to being her own advocate, both as a patient and in her family life, is nothing short of inspiring and Not My Buddy is sure to positively impact the lives of all who read it, as it did my own." ~ Stacey Freeman of Middle-Aged Mania blog"An insightful, edifying tale of the toll that a parasistic disease can take...Berkowitz writes of this challenging situation with honestly, humility and even humor." ~ Kirkus Reviews"In her first memoir, author Tracey Berkowitz shares with abject and detailed frankness a battle for health and what it both cost her and brought her. But Not My Buddy is more than a person's personal battle with chronic illness; it's a journey shared with two - and four-legged - family, one filled with beautiful words that detailed the deep kinship she shares with other small souls."  LB Johnson, author of The Book of Barkley and Saving Grace"An inspiring tale of persistence and determination. If you suffer from chronic giardiasis or any mystery illness, you should read this book."  ~ Leo Galland, MD, author of The Fat Resistance Diet

From the Author

CHAPTER 1 In April 2009, I stood in front of a full-length mirror and stared at my distended belly. I'd given birth to twin girls eight years earlier but looked and felt as if I was about to go into labor, except I was not pregnant. What I was--was a mystery. My runner's body had vanished overnight. I struggled to stay balanced on my feet. My dark hair, once shiny, had turned dull and fell out in clumps. I was shedding as frequently as the Golden Retriever that sat at my feet. Something was very wrong and he knew it. Buddy stared up at me, yearning for attention and a chance to play, but any activity other than sleep was more than I could handle. He was barely a year old, but I swear he was trying to apologize. His big brown eyes asked, is it really my fault? ** My fraternal twin daughters, Abby and Jolie, begged me to get a dog after we read every tale of Biscuit the Puppy and watched all the "Air Bud" movies. By May 2008, my husband and I finally gave in and contacted the breeder that my sister used the prior year. We told the girls we were going to the "dog farm," the breeder's house, to play with purebred Golden Retrievers. I melted seeing the girls sitting on the kennel floor surrounded by a new litter. I didn't care that it was filthy--it was a kennel after all. Abby and Jolie were ecstatic. "What would you say if we told you that we can bring one of these puppies home soon?" A chorus of "OMGs" were followed by a round of "THANK YOUs!" Two weeks later, we returned to choose our puppy. Choosing a puppy required some preparation and a lot of reading. I had done my homework, determined to find just the right dog for our family. What exactly did that mean? I wanted a smart dog, an affectionate dog, a dog that behaved and was good with children and made bad people run like hell from our house. I wanted a dog that looked cute, that we loved very much and that loved us back unconditionally. I wanted a dog that the girls would learn to take care of. Like a 4-H project. We could do this, I kept telling myself. It might even be fun. I did not have a dog growing up and hadn't considered myself a dog person until I spent time at my first boyfriend's house in junior high school. Stephen owned a beautiful blonde Golden Retriever with a seemingly submissive personality. He made it look like taking care of a dog was easy. I thought so, too, until his dog pinned me against the door in Stephen's laundry room, where he stayed when people visited. All he wanted was to play with someone and receive some attention. I knew he wouldn't hurt me but I panicked and screamed for help. Later in college, I had another chance to become a dog lover when my roommate agreed to keep her boyfriend's new litter of Bulldog puppies at our apartment. Their hairless bodies fit into the palms of our hands and I found myself racing home from class every day to play with them. Once they were sold, our apartment seemed empty. I was startled by how quickly I had bonded with those puppies and I missed them very much. When my daughters fell in love with the storybook character "Biscuit," it didn't take much time for me to start dreaming about our new lives together. I could imagine myself in our local dog park, chatting with my new dog lover friends, tossing Frisbees and balls, comparing dog foods and obedience training. Adding a dog to our family would complete us, I believed. The picture was almost perfect. I wanted 'the perfect dog,' but every puppy squirmed right out of my arms before I could complete the four personality tests recommended in Good Owners, Great Dogs; What All Good Dogs Should Know; Children with their Dogs and Golden Retrievers for Dummies. "You think those tests will work completely?" my husband, Jeff, asked dubiously. I continued petting the puppy between my legs, aware of my husband's smirking. I refused to let his healthy skepticism alter my plans. He nudged me a few times in the arm, then flashed his goofy, dimpled grin and raised his eyebrows until they disappeared under the lid of his baseball hat. He raised his hat in one hand, pushed back his brown hair with the other and winked--as if to emphasize his teasing. I elbowed him and rolled my eyes. The breeder helped narrow the selection for us, removing the puppies we didn't want, leaving us with three males whose fur wouldn't get thick like a wolf. We didn't want to ruin the carpets for God's sake. Abby insisted we take the runt. "He is so calm and not biting my shoelaces like the other ones. He's small and cute like me," she said and smiled. "No way I'm taking the runt!" I declared. I wanted a healthy dog. Maybe even a show dog. A dog we could rally behind, the centerpiece of holiday cards. Abby flipped me a look. "How about this one," Jolie asked. "He's cute and sort of calm." She laughed when he jumped right out of her arms and looked at us. "I guess. It's so hard to choose." Jeff held one of the puppies for a while. The puppy seemed calm. Jeff turned the puppy on his back to cradle him--using the personality test he had mocked. "Trace, he's really sweet and he's been hanging out in my arms the longest. We're never going to know what any of these pups will be like in a few months. We'll train him and he'll be great. Take him." I grabbed onto the six-pound bundle of fur. He was sweet and looked directly into my eyes. I turned him over, rubbing my hand around his little bald belly, feeling the warmth and softness. It struck me, here's my chance to have a third child--despite his performance on those personality tests. Suddenly, I forgot about the books. My future pulsed with possibility. It was as if I'd finally get to experience what caring for a newborn "baby" would be like without the constant worry of splitting my attention equally like I had always done with the twins. I paused with my hand over his heart and scratched under his chin. He hardly moved, clearly relishing this connection. Cradled on his back, he didn't squirm much, and he nipped only playfully. Clearly, this was a gentle soul wrapped in just the right amount of soft blond fur. He passed all four tests. I glanced at my family. "I can't believe I am going to say this, but I like him. I think he's the one! I think we found our Buddy guys!" ** At ten weeks old, Buddy would be ready to leave his mother and siblings and start a new life with us. We gave the breeder a deposit and returned Memorial Day Weekend to pick up Buddy. While I filled out the last of the paperwork, the breeder told us that Buddy had a parasite. I paused and looked up at him. "A parasite?" The breeder shrugged and nodded. "Yeah, giardia. It's very common among puppies. Nothing that this won't cure," he said and handed me a Ziploc bag with tubes of liquid antibiotics, instructing us to inject them into his mouth every day for a week. His relaxed manner eliminated the need to inquire further. I figured parasites, especially in puppies, were no big deal, like my girls having the stomach flu. "Easy, right?" he asked. I nodded, recalling the times I gave Jolie acid reflux medicine when she was an infant, and within a few days her stomach got better. I could handle this. We took more pictures and headed home while my daughters bickered over who got to have Buddy on her lap. I refused to let anything ruin our beautiful day and sat in the back seat between them while Buddy laid on my lap, completing the perfect picture. **

She did everything “right.” Before completing the picture-perfect life she had always envisioned with the addition of a new puppy to her young family of four, author, and soon-to-be divorced mom, Tracey Berkowitz, did her homework. But what she ended up learning was a powerful life lesson no amount of research could have ever prepared her for.In her debut book, 'Not My Buddy,' Berkowitz invites readers to join her on a whodunit medical mystery, sharing her five-year journey of self-discovery as she fights her way back to health after contracting Giardia, a parasite commonly responsible for causing waterborne illness, from her golden retriever, Buddy, for whom the book is titled.Berkowitz, who writes in a style so endearing that readers will feel as though they are one of her inner circle, candidly shares the intimate and escalating struggles she and her family encounter in the face of her rapidly declining health. As we envision Berkowitz’s steadfast attempts to balance life as a wife, mother, part-time preschool teacher, and caretaker of a rambunctious new puppy while trying for more than a year to systematically uncover the cause of her illness, readers will find themselves wondering how they, too, would function if similarly confronted with such a personal crisis.Berkowitz brings unexpected life and heart to an illness that is far more deserving of the limited awareness it presently garners. The attention Berkowitz gives throughout her five-year ordeal to her constant medical care, the needs of her family, and the dog she continues to love unconditionally is a testament to the unfaltering strength of the human spirit. Berkowitz’s take-charge mentality when it comes to being her own advocate, both as a patient and in her family life, is nothing short of inspiring and 'Not My Buddy' is sure to positively impact the lives of all who read it, as it did my own.

I thoroughly was very impressed reading how Tracey searched with determination on what her chronic ailment was. It was a long journey, but glad she is on the mend. By writing her story, Tracey can help others with chronic Giardiasis. H.F.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book Would recommend it to anyone who wants to read about a women and her struggle to get herself well. Tracey Berkowitz has a wonderful easy way of writing and I could not put this book down. Phyllis PA

I finished the book. I was so intrigued with the details of your journey I couldn’t put it down. I have known the story line but am beyond impressed at the person you have become. The medical terms, the vitamins, the holistic methods, the meditational awareness, the food sensitivity, the positivity, and the strength you have shown in this book is beyond admirable. There is so much that I can relate but yet there is so much that I can’t. Your journey is not publicized or marketed like breast cancer and chemo. My wish for you is that this book becomes national and parasites become as well known as cancer. There needs to be an awareness about this. I always had an extremely high admiration for you, but this book has raised the bar. You are one smart cookie, one devoted mother, and one strong person. Like I said, this is only the beginning for you….THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!

I took this book with me on vacation on my Nook . . . and I could not put it down. It is not a story of perfection; it is an inspiring story of one courageous women's struggle, journey of medical and self-discovery and ultimate success in her battle and ultimate victory over her exasperatingly impossible-to-diagnose condition and her own pre-conceived (ill-conceived?) self-image, made possible by her own courage, her husband and amazing daughters, and yes, Buddy, the dog that started it all.

Quite a moving and inspirational short book. Great for people interested in music and especially young people in the late teens yearning to go into the music field. Very interesting for older musicians who can understand with experience and maturity the talent and struggle Bernstein experienced on his way up. composition passages inspiring for those who read music and interesting to see how he developed a musical theme. He must have been a genius. The book mentioned he happened to take lessons at age 10 because a relative gave his family a piano.I was impressed with the book because in the back is a paragraph each on the different famous musicians and conductors that influenced him.It is a book for young people but all ages would love it. I am 75 and loved it.

Ordered for a school library. Excellent book, story and transaction. Thank you.

I bought this book for my Middle School band class to read. I am happy to say that those who have read it brought it back the next day, after reading it in one sitting! The only student who didn't like it gave the reason "I don't like biographies".

A very interesting and easy to read book about Leonard Bernstein. It contqained a lotof information about him that I did not previously know.

"Life without music is unthinkable." With that Leonard Bernstein quotation, Susan Goldman Rubin opens her remarkable biography of the legendary composer and conductor. For young readers wrestling with self-identity, Bernstein's life provides a near inspirational message: whatever your life's passion, pursue it to the best of your ability. (Of course, it doesn't hurt if you are naturally gifted and driven to succeed.) As a child of Jewish immigrants, whose business oriented father didn't always understand his son's obsession with music, Bernstein nonetheless was the recipient of an outstanding education, first at Boston Latin School and then at Harvard. Growing up in a religious Conservative home and temple left an indelible mark on the young musician which later influenced compositions with biblical and Jewish themes. This is a well-researched and elegantly written biography with an in-depth focus on Bernstein's childhood through family anecdotes and memories which enrich the book. The photographs, particularly of his childhood and family, are especially poignant and well-selected. Also included are reproductions of musical scores, announcements and notes. Ms. Rubin's fluid writing makes Lenny and his achievements come alive, especially with the inclusion of supportive quotes sprinkled throughout the text. In addition to a timeline, discography, bibliography and quotation sources, the book contains helpful short biographies of individuals mentioned in the book who would be unfamiliar to young readers. For ages 9-12. Norm Finkelstein

Rubin's well-written biography covers Leonard Bernstein's life and his passion for music from his childhood growing up in Boston through his brilliant conducting debut at age 25 with the New York Philharmonic in 1943 at Carnegie Hall. As all the famous conductors of classical music at that time were older Europeans, the young, American, Jewish "Lenny" created a tremendous sensation when he stepped in at the last minute to substitute for a conductor who had become ill.Lenny realized from a young age that "music was IT;" that music was what his life was going to be about. The author writes humorously of the resourcefulness Lenny had to use to earn money for his musical studies because his father, Sam, did not support a career in music for his son. Sam felt that musicians would always be poor, like the klezmers in the old country. He wanted Lenny to join the family beauty business, or become a rabbi. Rubin's lively writing captures Bernstein's larger-than-life personality and transmits the great joy he found in music throughout his life. She handles the subject of his sexual orientation tactfully in the epilogue, writing that "In his personal life Lenny felt attracted to both men and women and had many romantic relationships."The book is well designed, with a cover picture of young Bernstein characteristically conducting with his whole body rather than a baton. Engaging black and white photographs combine with the text to highlight his tremendous contributions to the music world through conducting, composing, and writing classical music, as well as composing for musical theater such groundbreaking masterpieces as West Side Story. As a teacher he communicated the joy he felt about music through his innovative televised lectures, the Young People's Concerts. These are now available on DVD so that new generations may learn from them. Rubin writes that Leonard Bernstein felt that life without music was unthinkable. He was one of the most recorded conductors in history, and the book is organized with a discography of selected performances, a timeline, an extensive bibliography, quotation sources, and brief biographical sketches of important people in Bernstein's life. Music Was IT compares well with Leonard Bernstein: In Love with Music by Caroline Lazo (Lerner, 2003) and The Life and Times of Leonard Bernstein by Jim Whiting. (Mitchell Lane, 2005). An excellent purchase for synagogue, school and public libraries, Music was IT: Young Leonard Bernstein would be great for reports on famous Jewish people and musicians, and is highly recommended.Andrea Davidson

Intended for middle school readers, this inspirational biography of the young Leonard Bernstein is well researched and gracefully written, quite capable of captivating parents as well as children. Bernstein’s sexual proclivities are mentioned only in a single sentence, and although his death is partially blamed on emphysema “due to smoking,” none of the well-chosen photographs show Bernstein holding a cigarette.

great

I am biased in writing this review. Kevin and I met during studies at the Graduate Theological Union. We were friends and fellow storytellers. He also became a hero of mine--in life and in theology. He died way too young and this book is part of his enduring legacy. His friends are the other part. This book is the summation of Kevin's love not just for the power of story but also for the power of story woven through ritual and religious thinking and teaching. As such, every man and woman, of whatever faith tradition, who dares to aspire to become a preacher, should read this book. The mystery of the Divine is "the" great story and any who wish to minister must know how to enter into the power of storytelling.I'm relieved to learn that this book is still in print and hope that it's made available as an e-book as it so deserves an ever-wider readership.

"The Amazing Secret of the Souls in Purgatory" by Sister Emmanuel of Medjugorje. Book's subtitle is "An Interview With Maria Simma". Queenship Publishing company, Goleta, CA 1997.This is a very short (58 pages) book, relating the interview of Maria Simma, a devout Catholic, who, for many years, has visits from the souls in Purgatory. These souls will ask Maria Simma to have prayers said for them: a Mass, or a Rosary, or the Stations of the Cross. The author, Sister Emmanuel, interviewed Maria Simma through an interpreter, and," for the sake of brevity and clarity" (page 3), Sister Emmanuel summed up some of Maria's answers. This book is not a summary of the Church's doctrine on the issue of Purgatory. Rather, the book recounts the answers of Maria Simma to the questions asked by Sister Emmanuel. That Maria Simma has been visited by the souls from Purgatory is confirmed by incidents (not fully documented in this book) of a deceased person relating details to Maria Simma, and her telling the family of the deceased these details. Maria would have all the details concerning the field, or the exact amount of money, or the property and..."the family would be staggered to discover that she knew all these details". (p. 38)For anyone wanting to discover what Purgatory is like, this small book gives a description of that place by one woman who has had visions for most of her life. Maria must be approaching her 90s, since she was listed as 82 in the year of publication (1997).The last few pages are a call to prayer for the souls in Purgatory by the author, Sister Emmanuel. The book is well worth the small price, and ... delivered the book quickly.

Absolutely a great book to read about Purgatory! It contains actual accounts of Maria Simma experiences with souls. I purchased both the Spanish and English versions for my adult children and cousins of mine to read. This can be a hard subject for some people to understand, but this book, I think, brings quite a bit of clarity.

This illuminating interview of a simple Austrian woman, who God graced with the charism of communicating with souls from purgatory, will motivate you to have Masses said, without delay, for your deceased relatives and friends as well as for those unfortunate souls in purgatory who have no one to pray for them. Maria Simma is a highly credible mystic, well known in her native country for finding the living relatives of souls who have appeared to her and implored her to have their relatives make reparations for the wrongs they have done. She has, in numerous instances, possessed information that no one in her capacity could have obtained, but from the decedent himself. It is a short book, but makes the important point that God is so holy that we must be perfectly purified to be in his Divine presence. Contrary to what one of the other reviewers stated, there are two types of pain in purgatory: the pain of separation from God; and the pain of sense (physical suffering). Make no mistake, it is a place of excruciating suffering. Almost all theologians teach that the souls in hell and the souls in purgatory suffer the action of the same fire. The same fire, says St. Gregory, torments the damned and purifies the elect. In my opinion, the quintessential book on purgatory is "Purgatory", by the 19th century French theologian, Fr. F.X. Shouppe, S.J. Amazon sells it. Thank you.

This booklet has a tremendous amount of information on the subject of "life after death" in general; not being of the Catholic faith, I was ignorant of many of the details of what purgatory meant, and with clarity and simple but profound words, Maria Simma explains the basics of it. It made much sense to me, and this little volume will be very enlightening to anyone who has had a "near-death" type of experience, "visitations", or anything that has given one a glimpse of another dimension, and needs insight into the mysteries of it.It will also point out the urgent need for prayer, and Maria explains of her visitations from people of other religions, that "anyone who lives his faith well is happy".There is a piety and goodness that shines from Maria Simma on these pages, and her testimony is most inspiring; she was 82 when this was written in 1997, living in a mountain village in Austria, and the way she relates her spiritual history is direct and with much humility; part of the praise must also go to Sister Emmanuel of Medjugorje, for asking Maria pertinent and intelligent questions. There is a tiny photograph of both of them, with radiant smiles, that is a joy to behold.Full of wisdom and faith, this small book has greatly blessed me.

It's not exactly catechetical, but it is still an amazing and enlightening book, and I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about the souls in purgatory.

This is a pamphlet not a book as I expected
