Review

Lee's book is a brilliant articulation of the unique and increasingly important role technology plays in the evolution of mankind. He offers a deeply optimistic perspective with clarity and intellectual rigor without ever losing accessibility.―Janos Sztipanovits, E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering, Vanderbilt UniversityEdward Ashford Lee has written a wise and witty book that is truly delightful to read, arguing beautifully for the deep connection between human cognition and technology.―Schahram Dustdar, Professor of Computer Science, TU Wien, AustriaIn every decent bookstore, you find shelves full of volumes written by top mathematicians, physicists, and biologists explaining the state of the art in their field and its impact on the human condition. This book is important because it is high time for computer scientists and engineers to do the same.―Thomas A. Henzinger, President, IST Austria

From the Author

The book is aimed at literate technologists and numerate humanists. Ihope you are one of these. Some of my arguments cannot be madeconvincingly without a bit of math, but I have made every attempt tomake these arguments accessible. I have provided guideposts where, ifyou are willing to accept my conclusions without diving into the math, you can skip the nerd storm.

As a measure of how stupid a person can be, let me admit that I bought this thinking it was the MIT Press book I'd heard about on the history of the PLATO computer system developed at University of Illinois from 1960-1980(ish). Measured in terms of how well it explains the PLATO system, the book is a complete failure (see the Friendly Orange Glow, also by MIT Press). On the other hand, the book is an interesting attempt to explain much of mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, and computer science in the context of figuring out what are the ultimate limits of software and AI capability. Usually these "big think" books are by scientists and they tend to be vacuous because the Big Brained Scientist knows that the Small Brained Reader won't be able to handle any equations or detail. This book (by an engineer) expects more from the reader, has more equations and detail, and does become heavy sledding at various points.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read quite a few of Professor Lee's papers before. In this book, he distilled his broad and deep knowledge on modeling, systems, computation and software in very readable style. This book is really well symmetrically structured. The first half covers how models are used differently in science and engineering. It goes on talking about the layers of abstraction in computer hardware and software. The second half gives reasons one chapter at a time the limit of digital machines based on Shannon, Turing and Godel's pioneering work. Then it gives why we need both deterministic and statistical models. Although I have worked on modeling and simulation for quite sometime. This book gives me much deeper understanding on the power of models. I would recommend this book not only to readers with STEM background, but also to anyone who is curious about the amazing achievements the information technology has brought to us. I enjoyed reading Stephen Hawking's brief history of time; I enjoyed reading Brian Greene's the fabric of cosmos; this book is the third one in this category I really enjoyed.

It is rare that a book can successfully integrate diverse fields of inquiry, but Plato and the Nerd does so quite well. I really enjoyed the book a lot and learned quite a bit from it, not just about computer science, which you would expect, but also philosophy, logic and mathematics. Two central points were made. First, while scientists try to make models that represent reality, engineers try to make actual things that match models, which is the opposite of representation and a much more open-ended enterprise. This seems to me a profound and interesting take on the field of engineering, and leads to the second central point that we should not just try to model human cognition with computers, rather, we should use them to go beyond what we are capable of and to complement our abilities. The book should be read by everyone who uses technology, that is, by everyone.

Really a good look at AI from the layman's perspective. Good stuff.

Edward Lee's Plato and the Nerd takes the reader on a journey to where computer science is leading us today. Extremely readable and informative, it also includes an important statement of the author's refusal to accept that all in life can be coded.

- This is one of those rare books that totally grip your imagination. I've read a few books over the years—as the readers of my blog ("Programming Digressions") are well aware of—but I was simply stunned by the uniformly high quality of "Plato and the Nerd", and the deep insights throughout its pages.- Some books set their sights low; some set their sights high. Some books are ambitious; and then you run into those rarest-of-rare ones which are hugely ambitious, and which grip your imagination. This is one of those books.- The author tackles a bunch of crucial issues and ideas (technological and societal at the same time) in "Plato and the Nerd"—issues and ideas that are of great interest to technologists like me who are working at the vanguard of emerging technologies—and he pull it off swimmingly well.- The 30 or so bucks I spent on buying this book is some of the best money I've spent. Delighted by this book. I'll be re-re-reading this one :)

This book is a mix of some interesting reviews of inventions and discoveries mainly in computer science and some dispensable discussions about the meaning of certain concepts. (Since the author is a fan of Karl Popper he should have known that Popper recommends avoiding such discussions). The main drawback: I failed to see the central question that the book deals with.
