"Beau Keyte and Drew A. Locher have accomplished an ambitious task―one that can benefit anyone concerned with creating maximum value for customers with as little waste as possible. ... Beau and Drew expand the use of the now-proven Value Stream Mapping (VSM) tool to indirect, support operations, and services, locations and sources of so much waste. VSM as introduced by Beau and Drew seeks to enable users to see administrative and service waste, identify its sources, and develop a future state that eliminates it so that scarce resources can then be focused on those activities truly necessary to create value. You could find no two more experienced guides for this journey than the well-traveled Beau and Drew."―From the Foreword by Dan Jones and John Shook

If you neeed guidance learning how to Value Stream Map this book will help.
This book was a book required for me to read for a class. However it has proven to be a book that I can easily reference later. The layout of the book has been done well and there is useful info on every page. This it isn't full of that bla bla bla and is probably why it is a short book.
THE book on VSM in the office environment
This book has been very helpful to my organization. It is clearly written and well-organized. Definitely helps with understanding how to tackle value-streaming concepts from an office perspective.
I highly recommend this work for anyone looking to improve the work they do in service or information industries. As corporate counsel for an education management organization, I do a good deal of work with school districts as well as legal departments. I have yet to see one that wouldn't benefit from The Complete Lean Enterprise. For non-traditional environments such as legal departments and school districts looking to benefit from proven lean practices, this book should be mandatory reading.
The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Office and Services, Second EditionIn "The Complete Lean Enterprise: Value Stream Mapping for Office and Services," second edition, authors Drew Locher and Beau Keyte have improved upon the first edition’s step-by-step process of how to map the current state of nonmanufacturing value streams, design an improved future state, and then implement the leaner future state. (Full disclosure: Drew and Beau are faculty members at the Lean Enterprise Institute, where I work. The book is published by CRC Press, not LEI.)The second edition adds what they’ve learned working with clients in the ten years since they wrote the first edition, which won a Shingo Research Award. The new information includes:• How to align value-stream improvements to strategic needs.• How the mapping team should “socialize†current and future-state maps to gain agreement and support from others for the proposed improvements.• How to developing tiered visual management systems to sustain improvements. They’ve also added more examples from services, such as healthcare, and dropped Japanese terms. The only such term I came across was “kaizen,†which seems part of the English business lexicon now.Perhaps most importantly, Beau and Drew are among the most experienced practitioners in applying lean principles to office and service processes. The workbook is generously illustrated and also offers “mapping tips†at key points. This updated edition is a must-read for managers and continuous improvement professionals who want a reliable, proven method for applying lean thinking and practice in office or service environments.
I was taught how to do value stream mapping by Beau and Drew and have continued to learn from them through their workshops and blogs. They are both committed to improving this valuable tool, and this book summarizes many of their recent upgrades. I recently had a couple of opportunities to try out the "chunking down" technique described in Chapter 7 and found it to be a real breakthrough. I also think that all managers should read the section in Chapter 10 about the "humble inquiry" approach to management. This book is full of similar nuggets that you can use right away.
The best process mapping and organizational strategy book I have ever read.
