I have read a number of Christian books on sexual enslavement. One common theme among men is the feeling that they cannot stop lusting and engaging in self-gratification. This book deals with the issue in a practical way and does not gloss over the realities that so many other books refuse to deal with. For example, it addresses the fact that some wives simply refuse to engage in intimacy with their husbands. The book offers a solution for the deprived spouse, and the solution is not simply to say (like so many other books do) that husbands and wives should not deprive one another from sex. Of course that is in this book and is correct, but that doesn't answer the question of the man whose wife refuses him. In my experience, most Christian men who experience less physical intimacy in marriage than they want already know that principle. Like I said, the problem is that their wives refuse them. So then what? This books handles that issue by taking it further than simply re-stating the ideal that husbands and wives should be physically intimate on a regular basis and seek to please one another. (Hint: If one's spouse is refusing to engage in sex during marriage, the answer is not to engage in more sin through more self-gratification, nor is it to sinfully pressure the wife into sex; the author provides real answers in an easy-to-read way, even though the path might be difficult and may even involve more deprivation.) Likewise, the author deals with common issues that seem to drive certain people to sexual sin (anger, self-pity like "my needs are not being met," etc.) and provides practical biblical counsel on how to identify and deal with them. Keep in mind that this is not an easy answer book. If you are enslaved in sexual sin, you likely have engrained habits that will take severe measures to deal with. However, if you are at the end of your rope and don't know how you will ever conquer this sin, check out this book. But before you do, pray and commit to following God's will even before you know exactly what it is. Then you will be ready to read the book and follow the author's advice. And don't worry, the book does not simply tell you to change your behavior. The author is far too experienced to think that you haven't already tried that (and failed). Through God's plan, you can see real heart and behavioral changes.
The first chapter was easily the best thing I have ever read on what the Scriptures teach about the heart. The book is seriously worth buying for that chapter alone. I would recommend this book for those not only struggling with sexual sin but any sin in general. Dr. John Street leads the reader through the whole process of change and consistently points back to Christ as the source of hope and change - not moralism.
It can be easy to assume that the struggle with purity, lust, and sexual sin is primarily a man’s problem. I can assure you, it's not. The struggle with sin (any kind of sin), and the temptation to follow our heart is common to all mankind – men and women.In his newest book, Passions of the Heart: Biblical Counsel for Stubborn Sexual Sins, Dr. John Street, biblically addresses the motivations at the heart of sexual sin and temptation.“He is a fool who believes in the goodness of his own heart. He is a fool who believes that the heart is a reliable guide for life. The biblical doctrine of total depravity means that every intention, plan, and purpose of the heart, no matter how good it may seem, is tainted by sin.†(pg. 16)In the very first chapter, Dr. Street clearly lays out the true, deceitful nature of our hearts, and the catastrophic results of foolishly trusting our own hearts too much. He then goes on to contrast the differences between the genuine believer and the professing believer, and the distinctions between worldly sorrow and true repentance. This chapter should be required reading for every professing believer who struggles with sin (of any kind).But, even if you do not believe that sexual sin is an area of struggle or temptation for you, personally, I would encourage you to keep reading.“Your thought life reveals what you worship, what controls your passions, thereby revealing what you love the most (Matt. 22:37-40).†(pg. 32)Each subsequent chapter offers insight into identifying the desires and longings that make the heart susceptible to the temptations of lust, and the bondage and enslavement that results when these desires are sinfully fueled. But, it doesn't stop there.“This may come as a surprise to you, but your goal is not improvement – it is holiness.†(. 223)In every chapter, this book is filled with biblical commands, exhortations, and admonitions to point the reader toward holiness and purity. But far from the cynical despair, resignation, and hopelessness that often characterizes this struggle for purity, Dr. Street consistently points the reader back to Scripture as the source of grace, hope, and sanctification.Although this book focuses specifically on the struggle with sexual sin, the biblical principles, thought provoking questions, and recommendations for further reading are extremely helpful in identifying temptations, addressing areas of idolatry, and repenting of sins in every area of life.I would highly recommend Passions of the Heart to anyone who desires to pursue purity and holiness in their life. I believe it will be an invaluable resource for individuals, couples, families, pastoral counseling, one-on-one discipleship, or men’s or women’s small groups, as a means of biblical accountability in the battle against sexual sin.
