Young mystery readers who are also animal lovers are in for a special treat with R.F. Kristi's munchkin-sized detective series. The detectives are an unlikely group of pet friends, including cats, dogs and a hamster. In Kristi's sure hands, they are models of friendship, acceptance and gumption.Kristi writes deftly, with a kid-friendly style that never talks down to children. She packs her delightful story with value lessons without ever insisting the reader take notice of them.OK, I admit it. I can't bear stories that hit kids or adults over the head with The Big, Important Message. Kristi keeps the tale she's telling firmly in the forefront, respecting her young readers and allowing them to take whatever they want from it.I'm asked to review more books than I'll ever have time for, but when one like this comes along, I figure the extra time is worthwhile. Now I'll introduce this Snoopy Cat to my grandchildren.
Diary of a Snoopy Cat is supposedly the diary of a cat named Inca, who lives with her brother and sister, Fromage and Cara. The three live with their human mother, Missy, in a small cheese shop in England after they had moved there from France. In this story, we read of a few of Inca's adventures leading to the point of Christmas day. From listening to the potential tale of finding a missing man in the mountains, to helping her neighbor. This book is listed as being appropriate for any age between 5 and 14, however, due to somewhat complicated phrases combined with an unfocused childish nature that is evident in the pages, I believe that the age group that would most enjoy this story are 8-10 years of age. While the idea of the story seems like it would be enjoyable this was not the case for me. While reading the story I found myself rereading pages multiple times as the lack of flow confused me. It seemed that Inca could not focus on one subject anywhere near long enough for the reader to absorb the information. One minute she was talking about her mom and how much she loved and, then the next she would be speaking about needing to find something for her neighbor with little if any transition.Inca’s diary seemed to lack important flow, as it seemed as if the writer had no idea how to properly format the pages. Character's seemed to give pointless dialogue for ages, chatting about things which held little to no importance to the story, if there is one, being told. There were also many pieces of the story that seemed highly unnecessary to the tale. I found myself to be very disappointed after spending what seemed to be an eternity reading about Terrance’s upcoming adventure in the Himalayas. The idea of Inca traveling across the globe just to help find a missing man filled me with potential excitement. Unfortunately, this was not the case as Inca was left behind with her family. Because of this I am lead to believe that the story involving Raoul was simply filler in order to reach a certain number of pages. In spite of the fact that I did not enjoy the story, I strongly believe that children ages 8-10 will enjoy the adventures of Inca and her friends. The unfocused, childish nature of the book will be easy for children to understand and relate to. If Inca's adventures continue like this I strongly believe that kids who choose this book will be pulling it off the shelves again and again.
What do one hamster, two villains, three dogs and four outlandish cats have in common? One great mystery with a fame-seeking feline who almost does not get to finish her adventure diary.Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R. F. Kristi and illustrated by Jorge Valle, is one adventure that will surely enthrall your child and tickle their funny bone. This chapter book has all the makings of a super sleuth, I mean, Sherlock Inca. It is like a Home Alone movie with cats.Inca is the adventuresome Siberian kitty that sniffs out trouble and mysteries with detective pros. She aspires to become a famous detective by following in the footsteps, or rather paw prints, of the famous detective duo, aka neighbors, Terrance and Monk. While Terrance is aiding his famous detective owner Solo in a missing person case, which takes them to the Himalayas, Monk, Fromage (Inca’s Tabby cat brother) and Inca are trying to find the missing will that will deed a house to their friend Ned and his bully Rottweiler, Boss. What happens if they cannot find the will? Ned becomes homeless and separated from his beloved furry friend. So, Inca devises a plan to sneak into the house and search for the will in the room of the suspect. Read the story to find out about her near captures, escapades and if she finds the will. This is an entertaining adventure mystery for children. It teaches friendship and responsibility as well as the vice of greed without lecturing. The author tells about foreign locales and cultures. There are a few grammar errors, and some sentences need rearranging to ensure the flow of the story. Overall, it has action, suspense, humor and anticipation. It is a cute story that anyone who loves animals and light mystery with small subplots, would enjoy. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
I read this to my five year old son and he grinned from ear to ear while listening to Inca's adventures. He thought Inca was indeed an excellent cat detective! It was a delight reading about an adorable cat who lends her hands (or paws) to the ones in need, whether they be friends or neighbors or mere acquaintances. Helping out a once ferocious dog named Boss with his house dilemma, Inca soon realized he wasn't a bad dog after all. It was nice to see them work together to get that will from an unsavory character. We loved how the other cats and dogs joined forces to help their injured friend and pets. My son also enjoyed the events that happened on Christmas day, where Raoul finally got his memories back. It was awesome!
