#640,996 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author writes well, and he has the British gift for understated humor (passing some Caribbean fishermen, he describes them as “fine stalwart fellows, who seemed to despise fashion so much as almost to do without clothing altogether”). But I had expected this to be a tale of an orchid hunter tracking through jungles to find new and exciting species. In this I was disappointed. There is no orchid hunting in the first half of the book at all; it is a travelogue of his journey from England to Venezuela and then Colombia. Once in Colombia, the orchid hunting begins, but it consists of the author and a retinue of porters trying to find more plants of orchid species that have already been discovered and the forests stripped of them by previous orchid collectors. By expanding the search area, on the other side of a river or mountain, the author sometimes finds thousands more, which he then strips from the forests to send to England, knowing that of the thousands, only a few will survive the trip. Never once does he find a new species. In addition, the author is a hunting enthusiast. He never meets a bird or animal that he doesn’t enjoy shooting. For me, this somewhat detracts from his descriptions of the beautiful beasts and birds that he encounters. For example: “Here also the rare and beautiful Swallow-tailed Kite may be seen wheeling gracefully overhead all day, but far out of gun-shot.” A description of a jaguar hunt is exciting – the wounded jaguar attacks one of the author’s native companions before the author kills it – but later, another jaguar gets away “without [my] being able to add another jaguar’s skin to the nine I had already.”The Kindle formatting is a bit strange. From one paragraph to the next the font size suddenly gets smaller for a page or so and then reverts to normal. There are a few misspelled words, but overall that’s not a problem. However, there is one place where an entire block of text is missing. Near the end of chapter IX, a statement about the President of Colombia ends in mid-sentence, followed by a picture of a waterfall, followed by a sentence about the waterfall which is a complete non-sequitur. Some text is missing here, and I don’t know how much – how did we get to the waterfall from the President? Are we missing a paragraph, or half a chapter? My main complaint, however, is that the illustrations on my Kindle Voyage are tiny; smaller than postage stamp size, and there’s no way to expand them on the Kindle. One of the larger ones was 27 mm x 18 mm (about 1” x 5/8”). I also have a Kindle Fire; I tried looking at them there to see if they were in color. They aren’t, but strangely they’re larger on the Kindle Fire than the Kindle Voyage, though still small. My guess is that in the original book these were half-page and full-page illustrations. Some of them are 19th century photos taken by the author and would be quite interesting, but as is, they’re useless. There’s no excuse for this. So, overall, the book is of some interest as a Victorian travelogue, but don’t expect much in the way of orchid hunting adventures.
