Although I’ve had the PMI PMBOK guide for months, I wanted something to supplement it as it is an 800 page book. This study guide is a great addition: it is straightforward in reviewing the process groups and knowledge areas and has also included materials that I might be tested on but that I do not deal with in my day to day as a PM, such as certain formulas, charts, and so on. I have also gotten some use out of the glossary that is available as a flashcards app during my commute. I think like most people, the practice questions are the most helpful, and I like that the answers all have explanations and the key is easy to navigate.The only critique of this book I can really think of is that it is succinct. It’s around 300 pages compared to the 800 page PMBOK guide. I think it is a book that you might use to study for the PMP while also having PMI’s guide on hand as a reference tool. That said, I have the hours to take the test, as I assume most others buying this book do. At this point, your studying comes down to making sure you understand the processes and getting in some time to hone your test taking skills.
This is not a book about project management but instead the PMP exam. It has a brief overview of all the areas to help you focus on your weak areas. It also has a really tough practice exam that mimics the real thing. It is a easy read with bolder terms to help you save time. It is not meant to be a substitute for experience or class work, but it will get you focused on the exam.
Exactly what I needed to prepare. Clearly a great deal of thought and precision went into the writing and creation of this guide. I have first read through the entire book as I know this is the appropriate way to plant the information into the brain. It is quite comprehensive. I believe it will serve me extraordinarily well. Thrilled I found this!
This book focuses on the wrong things and is not representative of the actual PMP exam.The actual exam is more focused on project management trivia, while the actual exam tests your ability to understand the flow, inputs, and outputs.Not to mention text errors (one question has identical responses for A and C) and math errors (20 person team plus 1 project manager is 210 communications channels, not 105).Rita’s book is much better for preparing you to pass the PMP exam.
Aside from the many math and text errors in this book, it focuses mostly on the terminology and definitions, which are certainly helpful, but not at all representative of the exam. I spent so much time studying and going through the sample exam here, and none of it translated over to the actual exam. The exam mostly focused on the inputs and outputs to the processes and case studies. You are better off going to the source than spending your time and money on this guide.
If you're a project manager, the PMBOK Guide and PMP Exam Book by Robert Nathan is the best supplement and study guide on the market. The practice test questions for the Project Management Professional Exam are really very helpful.
