i had found a posh planner in a bookstore but ordered this one bc i like the cover pattern better. lots of the pages are stuck together (not icky sticky; more of a paper manufacturing flaw), but with delicate separation (not typically my style), it’s usable i guess. i wish it had a flexible cover, but the size is right for my bag. considered returning, but it’ll do for this year. some of the motivational quotes are interesting, & i do like the monthly habit grid.

This calendar looks nice, and helps keep me organized. I like the combination of the whole month view, with the weekly pages that have room for appointments and a to do list. The pocket in the front is essential, so those little things you shove in there don't fall out.

I love this! It has everything you need in one place. Monthly calendars are easy to read plus there's room for notes.

This is going to be great for staying organized and keeping track of tasks!

I am the type of person that needs a planner to stay organized. This planner is everything I could have asked for and more. It is hard covered and is spiral bound. It has a little folder in the front for convenience. Every month is tabbed so you can find what your looking for in seconds. The first page of each month has the month at a glance and the following pages are split up by week. Every page also has quotes- which I rather enjoy.The planner is very good quality and I am sure will be durable enough to last until December 2019. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

Roger Crowley was born in 1951 and spent part of his childhood in Malta. He read English at Cambridge University and taught English in Istanbul, where he developed a strong interest in the history of Turkey. A description of the century-long naval struggle for control of the Mediterranean between the Ottoman Turks and the West, focusing on 4 major areas, the sieges of Rhodes, Cyprus, and Malta, and the great battle of Lepanto. Many other reviewers criticized this work as providing incomplete descriptions of some very complex military conflicts, but for me the depth of this work was exactly right. Although I have read a great deal of military and naval history, I am not one for recreating the movement of every ship or every battalion. I suppose you could write a whole book, for example, on the siege of Malta, but that's not what the author intends. His idea is to lay out the motivations of the Turks and the struggles of the West--primarily the papacy, the Venetians, Philip II of Spain, and the Knights of Malta to try to bury their many differences to confront the seemingly inevitable thrust of the Ottoman empire.Crowley's narrative sweeps the reader along, describing not only the conflicts but the people behind them and their motivations. The savagery of the fighting is examined in detail, a level of violence and barbarity (on both sides) that will shock modern readers. It's one of the most gripping and comprehensive descriptions of a century-long conflict that I have read.I would award this book only 4 stars, however. The maps (in the Kindle version, anyway) were unreadable, split between pages and undecipherable when expanded. Although the author doesn't seek to delve into enormous detail in terms of military hardware, I found it difficult to understand how galleys functioned and how they were used in battle. The fleets involved also consisted of galleases, galliots, and many other craft which were not explained. I had to study my faithful Wikipedia to gain some insight as to the strengths, weaknesses and uses of all these craft. The author would have been better advised to concentrate some effort here, as it's really not possible to understand naval strategy without some idea of the limitations that were imposed on battle plans by the technology of the era.

I asked LtCol Tom Kratman, USA (Ret.), the author of excellent military science fiction, for a recommendation for a high school graduation gift for a nephew of my wife who is joining the Army. (My fault, I think; the last time I saw the lad he was about 10 and I showed him the manual of arms with a training rifle.) The book looked so good, I bought a copy for myself. It is excellent history. I knew, of course, about the siege of Malta and Lepanto, but this filled in all the details. The author writes, "The idea of conquest was central to the Sultanate, intricately interwoven with it's holder's position as leader of the Muslim world. ... Only spectacular conquests could legitimize a sultan." The battle of Lepanto, the most decisive sea battle between Salamis and Trafalgar, ended the efforts of the Muslim Ottomans to conquer Europe and capture Rome, though they rebuilt their lost fleet. I was interested to learn that the commander of the Holy League, Catholic King Philip II of Spain's illegitimate half brother Don Juan, was only 22. Philip had ordered him not to fight to preserve the fleet, but he was eager for battle and glory. Some interesting notes: One of the fleet's Spanish arquebusiers was Maria la Bailadora, a flamenco dancer, disguised as a man to stay with her lover. The writer Cervantes, then 24, was there as a volunteer and was wounded in the battle. 25,000 Muslims died as did 15,000 Christians, but 12,000 Christian galley slaves were freed. (Both sides depended on slaves, often but not always of the opposite religion, to power their fleets. Raids by Muslim pirates/slave catchers were one of the causes of the conflict.) The author writes that, "Not until Loos in 1915 would this rate of slaughter be surpassed." I highly recommend this well researched and balanced history.

Roger Crowley has written a string of books about the six-hundred year conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Christendom. His focus is chiefly on the earlier part of that history, from the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (modern Istanbul) in the mid 15th Century to the middle European Renaissance. "Empires of the Sea" focuses on the war that raged in the Mediterranean from the 1520s to the Christian victory at Lepanto in 1571. It takes in the epic siege of Malta in 1565 and details the financial and strategic circumstances that drove most of the decision-making on both sides. As history it is sound, both detailed and well referenced. As literature, it is a well-written story of earth-shaking events on a huge scale, and at the same time it descends into the trenches of Fort St Elmo and the oar-benches of the naval galleys to give us the view of the "other" ranks. Uncompromisingly gritty and even-handed, it is very good history indeed.

This book is essential reading for anyone trying to understand late 16c European history, the Siege of Malta in 1565 and the naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The narration is engaging and captures the personalities and geopolitics as well as the brutality and suffering of the times. The author occasionally uses unfamiliar English words like ‘mizzle' (a mix of drizzle and fog) and ‘debouch’ (a march out of a confined space), so I recommend the Kindle edition which allows for easy lookup of word definitions.

The author quickly succeeds in engaging the reader in a fascinating narrative of a too-forgotten series of military and political conflicts, intrigues and courageous defenses and assaults within the Mediterranean arena between the more-unified Turkish Islamic juggernaut and a deeply-divided Christian Europe. The vivid desciptions illuminate a time of naval confrontation where slave-rowed galleys serve as platforms for heavy cannon on all sides, and Ottoman naval skill and tecnical expertise compete with, and frequently dominates anything that western Europe could float.

This book was recommended to me simultaneous to me hearing Rankin speak at a conference this year. The experience of hearing him speak increased my desire to want to read the book. It is easily the best which-book-do-I-read-now decision I've made in years. I was utterly captivated by the book from its opening pages.Union with Christ is something which I would claim to have known in bits and pieces, and therefore have knowingly experienced its benefits in only bits and pieces. This book brought those scattered bits and pieces into a coherent, well-articulated and illustrated whole. Rankin's flow in defining Union with Christ, then tracing it Biblically, historically and finally experientially brings a compelling case for presenting the importance, or I might even say, centrality of Union with Christ to the Christian life.As someone who works closely with college-aged students in ministry, I have already been recommending this book heartily and even purchasing additional copies of it to hand to students - it is THAT good. It is readable and accessible across a wide range of people and audiences. I cannot recommend it more highly.

This book is a fantastic read. Rankin has blended substantial scholarship and everyday-spiritual-direction in a way that few books in recent years have. I believe he accomplished his desire stated early on to recover the hugely overlooked doctrine of union with Christ while at the same time engaging timely cultural issues facing everyone in the west along with giving solid and simple ways to apply this doctrine to our hearts, lives, and mindsets.While I could recommend it for numerous reasons, I particularly think his treatment of grace and holiness was the best, clearest, and most succinct I've read to date (and as a pastor, I've read a lot on that topic!), which will greatly impact how I communicate and minister the gospel to others and even my own heart. Rankin deals throughout with a great number of false choices we often face showing that union helps us see how seeming opposite things are actually brought together in union with Christ.The book was challenging, comforting, and simply a delight to read. This book will be a gift to whoever will take up and read it.

I enjoyed savoring this wonderful book over time. Even though the subject matter may seem daunting to some, this book is highly accessible. The author deftly reins in his considerable intellect and aptitude as a theologian to relate to everyday believers in a very winsome way. Reading this book is like sitting with a close friend over tea, comparing notes on the incredible divine relationship anyone can enjoy. This book describes what this mystical union is and encourages us to enter into it, but if I could ask one more thing (perhaps from a sequel), it would be to get a stronger practical sense of what this supernatural interchange looks like on a day-to-day level. Clearly, this author has ventured into these spiritual waters and I'd love to hear more personal stories of what that's been like for him. Recommended reading.

Author Rankin Wilbourne adds his voice to the growing chorus of neo-Romantics proclaiming that imagination is the key to living an enchanted Christian life. "Imagination is necessary to know and enjoy God," he says, and is required for union with Christ, which is described as "an enchanted reality." (Locations 118, 131, 172.) Imagination is a must because God and Christ and the Holy Spirit are all invisible and, according to the author, the only way a person can experience invisible things is to imagine them. The imagination empowers one to "image something not present to the eyes." (124)But if we can only experience God by imagining Him, we are imminently likely to end up worshiping an imaginary god. That is why Romanticism failed two centuries ago. After the Enlightenment reduced the universe to meaningless matter in motion, Romanticism endeavored to re-enchant the world. While its poets promised a spiritual reality beyond what the eyes can see, all they delivered were metaphors about spiritual things derived from their perceptions of the natural world. The poet might speak of beholding heaven in a dew drop but all he really saw was the dew drop; heaven was only imagined. People who wanted a real heaven eventually discovered the poets only offered an imaginary one, and so Romanticism withered away.The author here is attempting to revive interest in an imagined spirit realm, but he offers nothing more than the original Romantics, namely, metaphors and similes. He insists this "language of poetry" is the "only way to capture the mystery of union with Christ." (185, 1394)The really sad thing is that the author heavily relies on the writings of those who actually experienced real union with Jesus Christ, including John Owen and Jonathan Edwards, but he then reduces these real experiences to imaginary ones because that is all he knows himself and all he thinks a person is capable of knowing.Jonathan Edwards, in describing the "divine and supernatural light" by which the Holy Spirit directly reveals to a believer the wondrous spiritual realities described in Scripture, expressly denied this was a work of the imagination: "[One] may be affected with a lively and eloquent description of many pleasant things that attend the state of the blessed in heaven, as well as his imagination be entertained by a romantic description of the pleasantness of fairy land, or the like. … We read in Scripture of many that were greatly affected with things of a religious nature, who yet are there represented as wholly graceless, and many of them very ill men. A person therefore may have affecting views of the things of religion, and yet be very destitute of spiritual light. Flesh and blood may be the author of this: one man may give another an affecting view of divine things with but common assistance: but God alone can give a spiritual discovery of them."John Owen noted that only those who have had this real encounter with the Holy Spirit are able to understand it: "And whereas this spiritual experience, which believers obtain through the Holy Ghost, is such as cannot rationally be contended about, seeing those who have received it cannot fully express it, and those who have not cannot understand it, nor the efficacy which it hath to secure and establish the mind, it is left to be determined on by them alone who have their 'senses exercised to discern good and evil.' And this belongs unto the internal subjective testimony of the Holy Ghost." This is an outstanding book and I heartedly recommend it to any RPG programmer wanting to enter the "e" world. Mr. Stone presents the CGI programming concepts in an interesting and clear manner. The programming exercises and examples add considerable understanding to the whole process. The sections an configuration requirements and other helpful programming suggestions complete a well thought out and worthwhile effort. I have invested hundreds of dollars in books that promise a lot and deliver little. This one is well worth the money. BUY IT!!!

You have to give the author credit for being the first person to publish an accessible book on bringing the iSeries RPG to the web. It succeeds in bringing together the diverse threads required (HTTP Servers, RPG, CL, SQL, HTML, Javascript, iSeries Security etc) to build RPG-based web pages. However this book is not without its faults.The overview of HTML, and Javascript is good, but there are dozens of better sources on the web. The entire discussion of the HTTP server is out of date and dangerously misleading if you are unclear on the recent developments of iSeries HTTP servers. This is not the author's fault, but the chapter should be re-written or removed. In the accompanying code, the author uses his own wrappers over IBM API's which are similar to industry standard CGIDEV2, but not compatible. His method also encourages the deprecated practice of embedding static HTML into RPG code. Also the author's shameless self-promotion is an embarrassment to the industry (you don't have to look far for examples)Before buying the book again, I would do a better web search because most of the material covered in this book is available elsewhere and often in better depth, unfortunately scattered on different web sites. However if you feel you must own a glossy covered book on iSeries RPG web development there are not many other choices.g the iSeries RPG to the web.

Bradley Stone's book, "e-RPG", is a must read for any AS/400 (iSeries) RPG developer wanting to make the leap to web development.Having a background in RPG III green screen programming, I was able to use this excellent resource to configure my AS/400's HTTP server for CGI programming, gain an understanding of RPG IV ILE concepts, use system APIs in my RPG programs, and begin coding RPG CGI web enabled applications.Brad provides numerous examples, with source code, of procedures that are needed for web development. Following his examples has led me to a basic understanding of HTML and JavaScript that I've been able to build on considerably.I was immediately able to code a simple "Hello World" web application with RPG, and 3 weeks later I had a more complex functional application that blew my bosses' socks off.

I had great hope for what what I could learn from this book. But it's mostly on and on about little useful how to stuff. At COMMON recently I strolled past the (new publisher cause they said the original went Bankrupt) publisher's booth and they were joking about writing online reviews and testimonials! They must not have known I was there. I looked over his new book hoping it would address the important stuff but it's wasn't much better and it's too expensive to make this mistake again.If it's the boss's money what the heck. If it's your money then keep looking!

Our boss was ready to outsource our web applications until the DP staff talked him out of it. We'd read Bradley's book and he broke it down into understandable parts and pieces and it made us really want to do it ourselves. Without his book, I know we wouldn't have had the confidence to go forward with the project. Many thanks!

I mostly like thus book. It does give a clear picture of the difference between what is living and non-living. I took one star off for occasional excessive wordiness. The other star was taken off, just because I think potential readers of this book ought to be warned that it also talks about dieing. My three year old wasn't happy to find out that baby birds who fall from the nest will never move again and are "dead"

This is a very nice book that explains what living things are and shows the similarities of animals and plants even though they don't "look" the same. My 3 yo has quickly grasped the idea of what's living and non living in the first 3 pages of the book and by the time we reached half of the book, she can pretty much tell what's living and non living in all of the things I've asked her to identify. Great book! (if you're taking advantage of the free shipping by the way, amazon will take advantage of the 10 day shipping period. Ours EXCEEDED 10 days! This book is just so nice so its well worth the wait!)

Living things eat, drink, sleep and grow - a simple explanation with examples that will appeal to most small children (e.g. cats, dogs, birds). Living things also die, and this is touched upon very briefly. I am always looking for books to assist me in homeschooling my 5 yr old son, and it's difficult to find educational books that don't bore or beat a topic into the ground. This was a satisfying choice.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter likes this book. So do I. I had to edit one page about death but it all makes since. I was surprised one day when she told someone that dogs need energy and she proceeded to tell them that they get energy from food, water and the sun. Blew me out of the water! Children are like sponges and they want to know how things work just like we do. These books are great at introducing the facts of life to young children and they can explain it better than I can.

A great follow up story for talking about living and non-living.

I teach special education and have found this a simple and concrete way to introduce the topic of living and non-living things. My students enjoyed the book and I would recommend it for teachers and parents.
