In the past few months I've read book after book that tells you that you must do this, you must do that. You must write out a 300 page synopsis before you can even begin writing. You must have 90 notecards on every minor character to know where you're going. You must write a notebook full of your character's history before really knowing them inside and out. It's enough to make the budding novelist go absolutely insane!I picked up Stephen King's 'On Writing' on a whim. I'm not a King fan -- my tastes are Sci/Fi & Fantasy & Romance. But I wanted to read what a bestselling author had to say about his craft, as most of the 'How To' books out there are by nobody you've ever heard of. He had me immediately hooked.As a writer, this book is a must-buy. Not only do you hear about everything Stephen King struggled through to get his book published, but he also gives you tips and tricks that he's learned along the way. Don't want to write an outline? Don't. Don't want to write about your character's grandfather's past? Don't bother. It's OKAY!Instead of bogging down the wannabe writer with 'surefire' methods, he discusses things most get hung up on, like dialogue, description, grammar, building characters, linking ideas, etc. He doesn't tell you that you MUST do it this particular way. Rather, he discusses what has worked for him, what he's learned through the business, and gives a few tidbits of advice along the way. It's entertaining, and it's flat out wonderful. It made me very relieved, as a stressed out writer. I went out and immediately threw away my notecards and my outlines. To heck with 'em!The first half of the book deals with King's early life and his struggles to get published, and then when he has a good basis set up, he swoops into the writing do's and don'ts.If you're a struggling writer that's struggling to find a decent book on the craft, please pick this one up. I cannot recommend it enough. I've read it twice already and I'm thinking about reading it again. It really is that helpful, I promise you. Not because it tells you exactly what to do, but because a bestselling author is telling you that you're NOT doing it wrong like all those other books say!

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

I purchased this book because the description stated that it contained all 4 books including Rage. What a disappointment to receive the book and open it to find that it includes only 3 of the 4 books... no Rage! If you are looking to complete your stephen king collection, avoid this copy! Incredibly frustrated buyer!

Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story. These aren't always well-written or creative, or something someone else would like. Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. This is one of those books. I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. From making up lyrics to songs sung by a fictional boy band and the brand names of fictional ice cream treats, to details of a Midwestern city that make those of us living in Midwestern cities think ours is the one in the story. I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds.As the story unwinds after the climactic events, my emotions surprised me. I've cried while reading books before, but not while reading the words of a bureaucratic proclamation!

The main reason I bought this book was that the description said that it included the story "Rage". I was dying to read that, and the other three stories would be a bonus. Well, what a major disappointment to receive the book and find that "Rage" is not included. There are three stories, not four, and I will be returning this book due to false advertising. Very, very disappointed.

We are hosting an exchange student from Taiwan who is interested in attending college in the U.S. as well. WE got her this book to help give her some idea of how to prepare for the ACT. So far she has found it very helpful especially as someone who did the bulk of their schooling in another country. She will be using it to prep for the ACT later this year before she goes back.

It is a well organized and thorough book explaining all aspects of feet and footwear! Excellent! the author offers good tips and advice about shoe buying and socks. The book saved me from mKing a big mistake. I was about to buy a well cushioned sneaker as well as well cushioned (thick pads) socks from Thorlo. He explains very clearly why excessive cushioning is not good for our feet. We think extra cushioning would be extra protective but he explains why that makes us more unstable. I am glad I read that before investing in a bunch of thick padded socks.

This has specific info about many foot conditions. But enough information is given that I learned what I needed. A nice overview with a few exercises. Good overview of shoe choices; some are out of date but most are still available.

One review panned this book and on that I almost did not buy it. Glad I did not listen. Well rounded book with lots of information-helpful information on problems, buying shoes, even trimming toenails. If you are getting older or having some issues and want to learn more about this important part of your body, this is definitely the book you want.

This is a very useful book for the person who had no foot problems until early old age. It does give a lot of text to medical problems and especially to foot mutilations caused by a lifetime of wearing constrictive fashion shoes, but these folks are likely already to be under the ongoing care of a professional podiatrist. But for the general reader who has recently developed tender feet, it provides a bonanza of specific information on what kind of shoes to buy, and especially what kind of insoles to buy.There are literally hundreds of products on the market, many of which can exacerbate a minor problem into something major, plus you could spend a lot of money trying out this or that insole or shoe. Dr. Langer tells us pretty well everything he knows, and everything current in the field. If you don't have a condition requiring a trip to the doctor's office, this book really fills the bill.

I was instantly drawn into Tiffini’s story. She has a way of writing that is inviting, and encouraging. This is, truly, the most authentic, honest book I have read. Her pain and trauma are not skirted around. She reveals her wounds in the most hopeful way. Every story told, every would revealed, has a purpose to it. Misfit Table is not a “woe is me” book, but a, “Look how God showed up in the midst of it all, every valley, he was there.”Honestly, there were many moments I wanted to grab Tiffini and wrap her in a big old hug, the type of hug I give my daughter to comfort her and let her know she’s safe. As I read each page, I wanted to invite Tiffini to my table, baggage and all, and give her a safe space to unpack it. Misfit Table is the unpacking of her own journey, and she invites us into her story. As hard as some circumstances are to read about, hope is woven into every word. The breadcrumbs are revealed. Tiffini shares with us the breadcrumbs, so we too can find our way to the Father.

Tiffini infuses the story of her life with the fire and longing of love, one that can only truly be found in her Heavenly Father, or Papa as she affectionately calls him. Her raw truth is a story that I find pieces of myself in, generational patterns, an absent father, growing up to soon, high expectations placed on self. It is a recipe for an anxious life, and an unsatisfying life looking for rescue where there can be no true rescue. I loved following the trail of breadcrumbs Papa left and knowing more about the beautifully, fierce woman behind House of Belonging.

Tiffini’s words were like healing balm to my soul. She shared some difficult things from her past and how she was able to work through them, fully relying on Jesus to see her through. She shows personal examples that would bring tears to my eyes and let me know I’m not alone! She works through abandonment, rejection, poor decision making, and more. OK, I give this four stars because it IS good. BUT, be careful! Jill MacKay co-authored another book on this subject. It is frustrating to purchase a "new" book only to discover that it is filled with many of the same patterns and images from another on my shelf. This book is like a rerun of McKay's part in "The Pattern Companion". For someone who has never picked up that book, this, I think, is the better choice to purchase. There are many clever ideas here - some new ones, as well. I only wish I had known that half of the book was already in my possession. I wouldn't have purchased this one.

This book arrived faster than expected, so I was already "pleased"...."pleased" turned into "Delighted" when I sat down and started paging through it! I'm a stained glass artist, so I was familiar with most of the cutting and safety aspects, but I was clue-less when it came to adhesives, grout and the creation of actual mosaic designs. This book answered all of my questions and more! Once again, it was the reviews written about this book that led me to my purchase, and once again, my fellow reviewers did not fail me...Thanks everyone!

I've never written a review before but I felt compelled to spread the word about this book. It's incredible! Every design featured in this book is a masterpiece of creativity. After viewing the art, I can't wait to get started on a project of my own. And the best part is that each design in the book is explained out step-by-step from materials needed to simple techniques. As if that wasn't enough, the back of the book even has templates so you can recreate the exact design if you wish. For inspiration, you can't beat this book.

This is an excellent book which gives you great ideas and helpful hints for mosaics. After I made some simple pieces, I did the Buddha head as well with mirror and stained glass.

My 16 month old wants to read this several times a day and has for the last few months. The flaps are really thick and she can't rip them off like she can on other lift-a-flap books.

these flip board books are great fun, entertaining and enjoyable. Perfect book for 10 months plus. Hope this helps

My son loves the lift-a-flap books by Cottage Door Press. I started reading them to him soon after he was born. At about 6-7 months he started to lift-the-flaps himself. These were the first flap books he could lift because the flaps are thicker and shaped for easy grabbing by little hands. The flaps are also thick and sturdy to withstand biting, spit, and tearing. We have read them so many times, but they surprisingly still look new. My son is now a busy 11 month old, so being able to play with the flaps keeps him engaged so I can actually read to him during this stage. Plus the stories are cute.

My 15 month old son LOVES this book. We keep it in our diaperbag and it is great at keeping him busy when we are out. He loves opening the tabs. Great value.

I purchased this for my one year old niece because she loves the other flap board books in this line. It's very sturdy and the flaps are easy for her to use.
