Review

From the reviews: "A thorough and readable representation of today's understanding of the topic ... An excellent overview of the various theoretical approaches to the physics that leads to decoherence. A particular strength is that it includes accounts of several experiments demonstrating the decoherence mechanism in detail ... An important resource for anyone interested in decoherence. It is very well written and it will contribute to further conceptual and theoretical development and to new experiments." Review by Anton Zeilinger, published in Nature 451, 18 (2008) "An excellent monograph about what the best current thoughts are on the link between quantum and classical physics. … rewarding reading for physicists who do not have the time or the mathematical preparation to delve into all the details. For such readers, the book includes interesting and accessible discussions of recent experiments … . a welcome contribution. The index is well organized to help readers find their way around. And the more than 500 up-to-date references are a bonus for the more interested, persistent reader." (Eugen Merzbacher, Physics Today, September, 2008)   "A very fine tour of the decoherence program in all its facets. ... Schlosshauer's book is highly recommended. ... [He] has written an excellent survey of a field that is of the greatest possible interest for the foundations of quantum physics." (N. P. The ultimate introduction, textbook, and reference on decoherence and the quantum-to-classical transition. This detailed but accessible text describes the concepts, formalism, interpretation, and experimental observation of decoherence and explains how decoherence is responsible for the emergence, from the realm of quantum mechanics, of the classical world of our experience. Topics include: • Foundational problems at the quantum–classical border; • The role of the environment and entanglement; • Environment-induced loss of coherence and superselection; • Scattering-induced decoherence and spatial localization; • Master equations; • Decoherence models; • Experimental realization of "Schrödinger kittens" and their decoherence; • Quantum computing, quantum error correction, and decoherence-free subspaces; • Implications of decoherence for interpretations of quantum mechanics and for the "measurement problem"; • Decoherence in the brain. Written in a lucid and concise style that is accessible to all readers with a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, this stimulating book tells the "classical from quantum" story in a comprehensive and coherent manner that brings together the foundational, technical, and experimental aspects of decoherence. It will be an indispensable resource for newcomers and experts alike.   "Reads like a bestseller. An engaging and intuitive treatment of a very important subject, combining the scope of a monograph with the clarity of a textbook and the intellectual excitement of a Sherlock Holmes adventure." Wojciech Zurek, Los Alamos "Everyone who works in the borderlands between quantum and classical physics, from philosophers of physics to quantum-computer technologists, will find much here to stimulate and inspire." Gerard Milburn, University of Queensland "A thorough, readable, and very useful account of decoherence theory and its diverse applications. Valuable as a text and as a reference work, both for graduate students and for active researchers in the field." Steve Adler, IAS, Princeton

At places too wordy and not giving practical skills. However, I found this book entertaining. Recommend for physicists who look for a simple book about the subject.

thank you

Lots of intuition. Highly recommended for newcomers in the field of quantum dynamics, open quantum systems.

Very comprehensive introduction to decoherence.

This highly specialized book determinedly sticks to its proclaimed aim with the emphasis very decidedly on decoherence . The author has contributed significantly to the field and everything he does in the book is carefully referenced to a bibliography listing no fewer than 514 items , bringing it up to the year 2006 .Zurek's work is copiously referred to . You have a theoretical problem with decoherence it's a good bet Schlosshauer has been there .You will find the formal basis for decoherence analysis and calculation extensively worked out leading to master equations which are then applied to solve specific model problems .Quantum computation is discussed as a prime victim to decoherence .Relevance of decoherence to various interpretations of QM is discussed : hidden-variables theories do not fare well . The status of the measurement problem is critically reviewed : the problem is still there . There also is a chapter on experiments demonstrating decoherence in a controlled way . The descriptions are detailed though not self-contained . For an experimentalist's approach to fundamental quantum physics experiments one should look at an also recent though somewhat earlier book by Haroche & Raimond .Thoretical physicists working in this field will want this outstanding book on their shelves and the author on their mailing list .This reader is left with a question : is there or will there be a consistently information-theoretical approach to the quantum-to-classical transition ?And here's an idea for the publisher : start quoting your book prices in oil barrels .Alex TrierSantiago , ChileRetired university professor

This book revises the fundamental interpretation of quantum mechanics focusing on the weaknesses of the canonical Copenaghen interpretation. The decoherence program is explained through the book not without useful and interesting remarks on the historical development and the state-of-the-art of the program. It's definetly the most understandble and enjoyble book on this subject, although there are probably just a couple of altrernatives. Very useful also to revise several quantum mechanics concepts and formalisms.

Typical introductions to quantum mechanics present it as being composed of two processes, unitary evolution of the wavefunction and collapse of the wavefunction. The latter being tied to things like an external world and observer. Consciousness is also sometimes invoked as playing an important role. While this is good enough to do many calculations and make interesting predictions, it's clearly not any kind of "fundamental" theory.Environmental decoherence explains why it looks like there is wavefunction collapse, why superpositions are difficult to observe and why a world governed by quantum mechanics looks classical. Often introductory books speak of "quantizing" a classical system to see the quantum effects, giving the impression that the quantum world arises from the classical world. Another benefit of studying decoherence is that it makes it clear that the (apparently) classical world arises from a universe ruled by the laws of quantum mechanics. This book provides a thorough and clear presentation of decoherence. It does not assume any previous exposure to decoherence. All the fundamental concepts are explained from the ground up. However, the reader should have a fairly solid background in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. I think at the level of a graduate course. Not only are the principles of decoherence clearly explained, but so are several experimental results relating to concrete predictions of decoherence. This includes predictions of decoherence time scales and how they compare to experiments. A nice aspect of this is that it shows that the transition from quantum to apparently classical is continuous and not discrete. There is also a chapter on quantum computing, however I only read the first section (which was good) and cannot comment of the rest.Although decoherence is an important part of foundational issues in quantum mechanics it doesn't completely eliminate discussions of interpretations of quantum mechanics. The second to last chapter deals with these issues. The last chapter discusses ties between decoherence and consciousness (not in the metaphysical sense, more along the lines of things like decoherence time scales for structures in the brain). These final two chapters are the part of the book that is most like a typical interpretation of quantum mechanics book and are very well done. While there are some very good to excellent books on interpretations of quantum mechanics, this book would be my first choice for studying foundational issues in quantum mechanics. The reasons are that decoherence is clearly an important topic, this book makes connections with experimental results (including effects at mesoscopic scales), it assumes no prior knowledge of the topic and it's very well written.

This is one case work study that ANY Minister should have in their library just to consider for its fundamentals - this is real law being applied in a religious matter and what was wrong and right in the situation as it unfolded - a true lesson in how our legal system views and should view religion and religion in respect viewing government. - Good book - get one!-Rev. Manuel Colunga-Hernandez

The actual story that this book is about (the legal battles of the Church of Lukumi Babalu for the right to exist), is pretty interesting. However, the author uses lots of legal jargon, and the writing style makes the whole experience a bit dry. From an academic standpoint, the book is great - tons of information and details about the cases. But from an entertainment standpoint, it feels pretty slow at times, and gives you the feeling that it could have been condensed to a far shorter (and more interesting) version.

I remember reading through this book at the library because I was interested in this case, even though I found it gross. I grew up in Miami in the Morningside neighborhood, and I can remember going to Morningside Park as a child and seeing the carcasses of chickens left in the park. When I asked an aunt about it she told me that a crazy religion amongst the Cubans were responsible for leaving them in the park. It idefinitely seemed pretty scary to me. Later, I studied with one of the foremost scholars on Santeria, Rev. Juan Sosa. So I feel that I know enough about this topic conceptually that I am able to look past feeling "grossed out" by the topic and focus on the underlying issues. For this excellently written book is important not just just for legal precedent but for the archaeology of ideas on the idea of Religious Freedom. For in fact the very squeamishness of this topic forces one to ask very dramatically, where does the idea of religious freedom come from?? In our modern society where we take religious freedom for granted we sort of assume that religious freedom must have come from religion somehow. And since a lot of people are traditional religionists we are tempted to believe that somehow these traditional religions got their act together eventually through the trajectory of history and produced the lovely result of religious freedom. But the best argument against this topic is not just individual arguments, but the cumulative testimony of all history. We can say clearly that there is simply almost no evidence whatsoever of traditional religions being the wellspring of religious freedom before the age where that very freedom was already an accomplished fact. Almost none. So if we want to find the genesis of religious freedom in Western Culture we must look outside the religious realm per se. We are also unlikely to find it in political philosophies which are intrinsically intolerant of faiths. One place to look for it, which is supported by plenty of historical evidence is in Freemasonry properly understood, but that is the topic for another very serious discussion. It is crucial to grasp these matters properly in light of the continued projections of a major player in the trajectory of this very case in Hialeah. That is the Roman Catholic Church. The views of the Catholic Church colored the whole background to the views of the lawmakers of the government of Hialeah. Catholic lawyers and Catholic legal scholars have a variety of views no doubt. But we can see the very background assumptions of their view on the issue of religious freedom by the legal fate of this case. In a way it is much better to focus on a very particular and squeamishly particular case than to talk in the abstract, or on the level of "principle" in order to understand the views of the Roman Catholic Church, which no doubt comprises the faith choice of the vast majority of residents of Hialeah. You could not see the very opaque character of the abstract level of discourse on this matter than in Pope Benedict's trip to England. It might seem strange to set a up polarities between Hialeah and the Pope in London but not really if you want to see the real nature of religious freedom. The exquisite architecture of English Gothic churches don't sit easily as an image with the notion of tawdry chicken sacrifices in Hialeah. But from this perspective the idea that Catholic philosophy per se should be seen as a wellspring of religious freedom is just about as unlovely and improbable as a Santeria dead chicken. But on EWTN's coverage of Pope Benedict's speech about civil discourse the ever- tendentious and spectacularly historically fabulist Fr. Robert Sirico of the Acton Instititute prattled on and on in the abstract about Catholic philosophy supposedly being a bolster for religious freedom. Now perhaps Fr. Sirico has a strong enough belief in limited government that he would have supported the rights of the animal sacrificers in this matter. And there might have been a good Chicken Cacciatore coming hypothetically his way as result, who knows! But the particularities of this important chicken matters for the Catholic Church (in more ways than one of course!) shows that religious freedom hardly belongs in the history of religions per se.

We as a culture slaughter animals by the millions, in large death factories that inhumaely kill these animals and wrap the bits and pieces up in nice and tidy cellophane containers so Americans can eat meat without having to do anything as un-christian as kill a living being. What RARELY, if ever gets mentioned is that in Santeria (as it is in all ATR's) The animal is ritually cleansed and killed, with the blood offered to the Orisha, and the meat is then eaten in a feast by the worshippers. The Kosher Jewish practice, the animals are ritually slaughtered in the most humane way possible.Even in the bible, the Christian God demands blood/animal sacrificeWith my white-bread secular upbringing, Even I can respect and uphold the practices of animal sacrifice in the righteous manner that is practiced by folks who are true to the path of La Regla.

The book narrates the judicial dispute between Ernesto Pichardo, a Cuban immigrant, and the city of Hialeah for the establishment of the Church Lukumi Babalu Aye. The Church practices the religion of Santeria, a mix of old African religions and Catholicism, and performs ritual sacrifices of chicken. The city passed a law prohibiting animal sacrifices and made the foundation of the church impossible. The dispute goes all the way to the Supreme Court, raising issues about the limits of religious freedom and the protection of animals and involving diverse groups of the society. Although the Supreme Court justices unanimously decided that the city ordinances were discriminatory, the basis for the decisions differed greatly. Some of the arguments in favor of the end of the Hialeah's law against animal sacrifice were that is was generic, against the mistreatment of animals, and not particularly against that church. The arguments in favor of the Church were that the law was biased, created to attack the church and the religious values of the minorities, and not to protect the animals in generalO'Brien analyzes this dispute in a political, legal and cultural way, offering exceptional insights and important information that add new prospects to the discussion. The book begins with a presentation of Ernesto Pichardo's life and to the origin and practices of the religion of Santeria. Then it makes an explanation about the politic matters underlying the litigation and describes the evolution of the courts decisions regarding religious liberty. The last chapters of the book analyses the different stages of the litigation, providing "behind the scenes" information that go beyond a superficial understanding of the case. The book is easy to understand and may interest the academic reader as well as the general public. The author's approach to the case clarifies the issues that motivate the litigation, and raises an important discussion about the limits for the religious freedom rights and for the creation of government policies, as well as the politic situation of the contemporary United States.

From the Inside Flap

SATAN. THE DEVIL. BEELZEBUB. Our sworn enemy goes by many names. Scripture calls him our "adversary" who prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. He "doth seek to work us woe""¬‚¬"and our testimonies and lives hang in the balance. Yet Christians are often ignorant of his plans, power, and even presence, and are easily caught off guard. Are we taking Satan seriously? Do we know how to stand firm against the prince of this world? Here, respected pastor-scholars shine the light of Scripture on our ancient foe, identifying who he is, explaining how he operates, exposing his deceit, and celebrating his final demise. They will equip you to more fully understand the war we are engaged in and how you can "resist the devil" in the power of Christ. R. Kent Hughes "¬‚¬" Satan in the Garden Thomas J. Nettles "¬‚¬" Knowing Satan Ronald L. Kohl "¬‚¬" Malevolent Methodology Derek W. H. Thomas "¬‚¬" The World, the Flesh, and the Devil Roger Nicole "¬‚¬" Conflict with Evil R. Kent Hughes "¬‚¬" Deliverance from the Evil One Joel R. Beeke "¬‚¬" Persevering in Satan's Sieve Thomas J. Nettles "¬‚¬" The Final Demise Sinclair Ferguson "¬‚¬" All Things New Each year, the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology presents speakers and subjects to strengthen the church's faith. This carefully edited selection concentrates on our knowledge of and resistance against Satan.

The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld: A Memoir

Review

“Hocking is earnest and candid, and he writes well about nature. . . . Invigorating.” ―The New York Times Book Review“In this appealing memoir, the young author finds salvation from a dead-end Manhattan office job in an activity not often associated with New York: surfing. . . . The passages about surfing and the relationships it fosters are filled with excitement and tenderness. It's hard not to cheer for [Hocking].” ―The New Yorker“With nearly pitch-perfect tone, Hocking impressively builds [The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld] around a series of tension-and-release vignettes that roll through the narrative like waves. . . . Hocking's journey will prove relevant and immediate in its exploration of maturation and experiencing both spiritual collapse and, eventually, renewal.” ―The Boston Globe“Hocking doesn't dwell on his misfortunes, or cast himself as the hero. Instead, Wonderworld focuses on a more common, less headline-catching narrative: the small, lovely, but difficult, ways human beings heal in a world rife with mistakes and misjudgments, wrongdoing and despair. . . . [The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld is] reflective and honest, with charm and just the right amount of innocence.” ―Los Angeles Review of Books“In this elegant hybrid of homage to Melville and memoir, Hocking examines timeless archetypes and questions their pertinence in his own life. . . . His admiration for Melville's opus does not prevent him from telling a compelling story of his own.” ―Library Journal, starred review“Through stylistic understatement and perfect tonal pitch. . . . Hocking ultimately transcends 'the dark Ahab force.'” ―Kirkus, starred review“A lovely, measured, and complex examination of how we manage to heal ourselves amidst the messy tumult of the world around us--a quiet and brilliant achievement of both emotion and technique.” ―John D'Agata, author of About A Mountain and judge of the 2015 Oregon Book Award in Creative Nonfiction“Melville called Ishmael a 'dreamy, meditative man.' So is Justin Hocking. From his modern masthead, he sees a capacious and generous world, one he brings to life in this erudite and introspective memoir.” ―Shelf Awareness“The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld is one of the most satisfying memoirs I have read in years, a book both moving and sagaciously written.” ―Largehearted Boy“This beautiful memoir is beyond cool. A voyage both erudite and affecting.” ―Junot Díaz, author of This Is How You Lose Her“As generous as it is smart, as intimate as it is grand, as illuminating as it is dark. With grace and guts, Justin Hocking dares to go where few men have gone before: not only out to sea, but also into the depths of the human heart.” ―Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild“Melville-haunted, surfing-imbued, and wisdom-packed, The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld is a lucid and moving memoir. Hocking's laid-back erudition and narrative generosity take us by the hand down a winding path at the end of which lies a new openness to the world's wonder.” ―Antoine Wilson, author of Panorama City“The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld is transcendent. Justin Hocking explores what it means to be a skateboarder, a surfer, and a writer, and he lays bare the pains and joys of each, the surprising ways the endeavors mirror one another. The book is thrilling in its structure and moving in its emotion and conviction. The chapters roll like waves, carrying you along and breaking over you, washing you in revelation after revelation.” ―Bret Anthony Johnston, author of Remember Me Like This“Searching, gutsy, and vulnerable, The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld is a deeply felt account of a young man's aching coast-to-coast search for an emotional home in the world. The settings and quasi-romances couldn't feel more contemporary--anti-depressants and underground New York skateparks, sleeping pills and cold water surf breaks in the Pacific Northwest. But the journey couldn't be more universal, painful, and worthwhile.” ―Daniel Duane, author of Caught Inside: A Surfer's Year on the California Coast“This nightshade journey reflects on the inner Ahab inside all of us. . . . Melvillian arcana abounds, leading to a profound journey into Moby-Dick's infinitude of meanings, mixed with inopportune break dancing, a harrowing carjacking, and a meditation on the redemptive power of skateboarding and surfing, the allure of waves and the sea, and life itself.” ―Jocko Weyland, author of The Answer Is Never

Unsure of what to think about this book before reading it. Enjoyed it greatly. this book is a bit off the beaten track, but I related to so much of what Mr. Hocking had to say, surfed and lived locations in his memoir, so I had an easy time making the connection to his story.Well written and the format/sequence of the chapters/stories would seem haphazard, but all work/fit nicely. Though I doubt I'll rush out to read "Moby Dick," it was nice to see how that book impacted his life.Certainly worth reading, especially if you want to take a divergent path to seeing someone else's personal truths and discoveries.

Wow.Having just finished Justin Hocking's memoir about his obsession with surfing and Moby Dick, and his struggles to find direction in his life and overcome his addiction to being in relationships, I feel much like I'd imagine one does after a good round of surfing—breathless and exhilarated, simultaneously.Justin Hocking was a West Coast kid, outdoorsy, constantly obsessed with motion, an obsession he fed first through break dancing and finally through skateboarding. He became obsessed with Herman Melville's classic novel and really felt it spoke to him, both about his own struggles and the struggles of the world around him. He did painstaking research into Melville's life and career, and read everything he could get his hands on that has been written about the book. (He also has a list of others obsessed with the book, including Jackson Pollock and Laurie Anderson.)When Hocking moved to New York, he was struggling with the inevitable end of a long-distance relationship and trying to figure out what to do with his life when he spotted someone on the subway holding a surfboard. Shortly thereafter he became obsessed with surfing anywhere and anytime he could, and found himself among a rapidly growing circle of friends who all shared the same love for the sport and the feelings it provoked. As his life grew more and more chaotic and confusing, Hocking could only find peace amidst the waves. But surfing wasn't enough to make him content. As he started to wonder whether he'd ever find true love, and then began realizing that perhaps he had problems with being in romantic relationships, his life became more emotionally anguished. And on top of that, he grew increasingly unhappy with his job and with much of the culture of New York City, yet found himself incapable of making a decision whether to move to Portland, Oregon, or stay in New York, where he can surf whenever he wants to. On a visit to his family, a violent encounter throws him even more in turmoil, and he equates his struggles and the feelings they cause with those of Captain Ahab. This is a meticulously researched, emotionally poignant, fascinating, and sometimes humorous book, populated with a tremendously memorable and endearing cast of characters. While at times the book veers off into strange tangents involving Hocking's family (in an effort to illustrate that his obsession with the water may very well be genetic), and he does rant a bit about George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, I was completely compelled by Hocking's memoir. Considering I know nothing about surfing or skateboarding, and have only read Moby Dick once, I was surprised how utterly hooked I was by this book. I think Hocking would be a fascinating person to talk with, and I would love to watch some of the people he wrote with, even from afar, just to see if their reality matched what I saw in my head.I don't read a lot of memoirs; it takes a compelling subject and a talented writer to reel me in. The Great Floodgates of the Wonderworld succeeds in both categories. It's unlike anything I've read, which means it will stay in my head even more than it would on its literary merits alone.

I read this book because it was a book club assignment. Some of the early chapters were not as well written as some of the later chapters. I believe it to ne a "coming of age" book in which the author details his attempts of trying to have meaningful relationships with women. He admits that he might be the cause for the failures. By the end of the book we see progress, but we do not see any evidence of real resolution.

Justin has lived a life and then some. His courage and bravado to face life head on will stick with me. It is so difficult to face ones fears but when you do and come out the other side everything about your life seems better for having tried. I will endeavor to be more brave and try new things even though they are scary to me. Thank you Justin for sharing. I hope you continue to write as I look forward to your next book.

I loved reading this book because it brought back so many memories of 90th Beach Street and its contrast with living in NYC.

I went to college with the author. Lost contact with him for the past 14 years but found this book through another mutual friend. Amazing to read Justin's journey and to see many of my own struggles in the story since we last spoke. This story will resonate with anyone that has spent time skateboarding, surfing and pursuing their creative dreams.

Fascinating look into a young man's life journey.

My favorite book of 2014! Epic.

Book Description

"Instead of writing a bitter condemnation of the Nation of Islam, Tate has adroitly described its purpose as well as its shortcomings." —USA Today"A temperate and sympathetic treatment of an African-American family's religious evolution." —Publishers Weekly"A compelling story. It provides an honest, inside view of one of America's most controversial religious movements and perceptively points to social tensions of race, gender and religious identity." —Kirkus Reviews"Extremely valuable. Recent literature is interested almost exclusively in male leaders. Tate's book provides a new perspective. I have used the book in a number of teaching contexts to very good results." —Judith Weisenfeld, Vassar CollegeIn Little X, Sonsyrea Tate reveals, through the acute vision and engaging voice of a curious child, the practices and policies of the mysterious organization most know only through media portrayals of its controversial leaders Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. First published in 1997, Little X chronicles the multigenerational experience of Tate's family, who broke from the traditional black church in the 1950s to join the radical Nation of Islam, then struggled to remain intact through disillusionment, shifting loyalties, and forays into Orthodox Islam.Little X is also an absorbing story of a little girl whose strict Muslim education filled her with pride, confidence, and a longing for freedom, of a teenager in an ankle-length dress and headwrap struggling to fit in with non-Muslim peers, and of a young woman whose growing disillusionment with the Nation finally led to her break with the Muslim religion. Little X offers a rare glimpse into the everyday experience of the Nation of Islam, and into a little-understood part of America's history and heritage. Sonsyrea Tate-Montgomery has been a staff writer for the Virginian Pilot, Chicago Tribune, and the Washington Post. The recipient of four coveted Echoes of Excellence awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, Tate has also worked as assistant to Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. She currently works as a political reporter for The Gazette, a Post-Newsweek publication.

Memories. The author's reflections gave me the courage to ponder my eldest children's experiences. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad IS Allah's Last Messenger. He taught us to pray and ask Allah to keep us in our Right Mind at all times. The sister is blessed to have received the training and knowledge of self.

It was AWESOME to finally understand the Nation of Islam from a young girl turned extraordinary Woman's perspective. Thanks to Ms. Sonsyrea Tate, I no longer have to guess at what the experience was like. She takes you on a very practical, tangible journey, in her own words.

Wonderfully written, I'll read this again. Very good story, something I'll get my children to read. Should be turned into a movie.

Sonsyrea Tate is an award-winning journalist. This book was selected by the American Library Association as a Best Book for Young Adults in 1998 and was featured in the New York Library Association's Books for the Teen Age 1998 in the "USA Black America" section. She writes in the Introduction to this 1997 book, "my life as an African American Muslim girl was bittersweet. After leaving the Nation, my family journeyed through several interpretations of Orthodox Islam. But in the midst of praying five times a day, something went wrong and I watched my family fall apart. I wasn't sure whether we fell because of our Islam of despite it. I set out to examine my life to find some answers. I hoped that by writing it all down, spelling it all out, it would begin to make sense."Here are some quotations from the book:"While (children in public schools) learned that slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., had been a hero, we were taught that he had been a coward." (Pg. 29-30)"Most of the people in the Nation had been vulnerable emotionally and spiritually, and in other ways downtrodden, when they joined the Nation. So it was easy enough to mold them. And those of us born into the Nation simply went along with the program. For the most part." (Pg. 48)"(Elijah Muhammad) said the fight for women's liberation what a white woman's battle; that the black woman needed to stay home and take care of her husband and children. The black man, he said, had enough to fight out in the world without having to fight with his woman over women's rights." (Pg. 84-85)"We all heard of brothers getting 'chastised' and winding up mysteriously dead. But none of us made the connection that the deaths and chastisements might have been related." (Pg. 101)"Orthodox Muslims ... didn't consider what Elijah Muhammad taught true Islam because Elijah Muhammad based his teachings on a mix of the Bible, the Quran, and that nationalist philosophy preached by the late Marcus Garvey. In the Temple we were taught to disregard Orthodox Muslims because they refused to accept the fact that we were the real chosen people referred to in the Bible and the Quran." (Pg. 111)

The author's paternal grandparents joined the Nation of Islam in the early 1950s and by the time she was born in 1966, the family enjoyed a leading position in the Washington, D.C. temple. With a memory that borders slightly on the unbelievable, Tate recounts her early childhood in the Nation, followed by her mother's conversion to mainstream Islam, the discovery of her family's religious hypocrisy, and then her own crisis of faith and exit from Islam, followed by a journalistic career that included a stint at The Washington Post. Tate's account has particular value for giving a sense of the life of the poor but defiant life that NOI membership entails. The awkwardness of being marked by NOI customs (clothing, diet, female modesty, no extracurricular activites or games) comes through as one strong motif ("I felt like an ugly duck"), plus the extreme relief at being able, once no longer a Muslim, to blend in with the crowd. Tate makes vivid the narrow scope of her ambitions ("I knew . . . the only reason I was on this Earth [was] to become a good wife and mother") and describes the total protection by her male relatives against non-NOI men ("If somebody made your sister cry, you gotta beat him up!") -- though, alas, not against non-NOI women and their cutting remarks. She recalls rumors of Fruit of Islam hit squads, the agony as an eight-year-old sitting straight through an eleven-hour temple service, and her Christian grandmother who tried to trick her into eating pork ("we knew better than to eat any pink meat"). More surprising is the author's endorsement of her education at an NOI elementary school, despite its obvious drawbacks ("We didn't have textbooks, so the dictionary pretty much became our spelling book").Middle East Quarterly: Islam in the United States December, 1998

A sneak peek at the Nation of Islam, the Washington, DC version, through the eyes of little Sonsyrea X. The author paints a vivid picture of her world as a child growing up in the Nation with all of its restrictions and structure. With all of the rumors surrounding Elijah Muhammad, the NOI changes following his death, and Sonsyrea's mother's move toward Orthodox Islam, it's no wonder the inklings of her departure from the religion arise in the end. I enjoyed this much more than her second book, Do Me Twice.

Fantastic. I study religion, and this book provided fascinating new insight into a movement that has changed and gone through many hands. I learned a lot, and chnaged my point of view as a result...I guess that the number one thing that I learned was that all people just want an identity...and Elijah Muhammad provided that African American with that. There are a lot of interesting facts that one can glean from this book.
