Review

A Boston Globe Best Children's Book of 2018YALSA William C. Morris 2018 Finalist"Check, Please! is very much a thing of our time in its approach to gay identity and romance... There's no big coming-out scene, no 'convert the lone homophobe' drama, no storyline cooked up just to educate the reader about the gay experience. Bitty doesn't need any of that, and Ukazu gives the reader credit for not needing it either." ―NPR"Check, Please ― an endlessly delightful web comic about hockey, baking, and bros." ―Den of Geek "Check Please! is the perfect reminder of the growth in queer narratives we’ve gotten in the past few years...filled with cute romance, zero toxic masculinity, and a really great sense of male comradery that’s refreshing to read." ― The Mary Sue"Ukazu, who began Bitty’s story as an uberpopular webcomic, folds in plenty of hockey terms and highlights team camaraderie while skillfully dismantling themes of toxic masculinity…A slow-burn same-sex romance is just the icing on the cake (sorry―pie) in this irresistibly fun and utterly charming sports story. Volume two can’t come fast enough" ―Booklist, starred review"This is a warm story with an irresistible protagonist, a clever supporting cast, and lively and plentiful game and practice scenes... A fun and deeply satisfying read for teens." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review"The art relies on thick linework and facial shots to tell the story, playing to Ukazu’s knack for pithy, personality-showing dialogue. Ukazu blends a series of tropes (coming-of-age, coming out, an outsider finding acceptance) into one coherent, amusing tale." ―Publishers Weekly

It was excellent, and gave what felt like a very real, but positive, view of a college hockey team (thus the "teens" rating- I was hoping it would be OK for sixth grade, but between swears and drinking discussions, I can't make it work for them). My only critique is that I wish everything had gone in order. You have essentially three sections to the book- the comic, supplementary comics that explain terminology and background, and "tweets" by the main character. I wish the terminology and tweets had been incorporated in with the comic, in the order in which they "occurred"- they would have filled in many of the gaps I felt in the first half. The tweets in particular really rounded out and explained the central relationship, and reading them *before* the ending would have been nice! I had to keep flipping back and forth to figure out where each tweet happened in the storyline.

This graphic novel was originally a webcomic created by Ngozi Ukazu that later got picked up and published by 01First Second at Macmillan. This is the story of Eric Bittle (Bitty) — former junior figure skating champion, vlogger, pie baking freshman who is part of Samwell University’s hockey team.Starting university our gay protagonist makes new friends, makes unforgettable bonds and falls in love (with the very handsome broody captain).Aside from the beautiful plot that deals with being a freshman, making friends, falling in love, facing your fears and working as a team, my favorite part of “Check, Please!” was the art style. Most noticeably Ms. Ukazu’s gradual transformation of Bitty’s physic and how he presents himself. It reminded me of how Edward Elric grew up in Fullmetal Alchemist, but it was slow and subtle that you don’t notice it until you watch the first episode and then the last episode. Bitty went to the same slow physically growing up transformation and it was brilliant.Even though this is a “hockey story” anyone with negative zero knowledge of hockey (like myself) is able to pick on the rules of the game. Because ultimately we, the reader, are also Bitty’s youtube audience and he treats us as such. He makes sure to explain hockey to us as he tells his story and it felt really natural. After all, Mr. vlogger knows that not everyone in his audience has hockey knowledge.Ms. Ukazu also created a beautiful cast of character. Each one lovable, relatable and a precious cinnamon bun. No one is just there, everyone has a purpose, a personality, and a well-developed character arc. While this obviously a work of fiction Ms.Ukazu’s novel felt natural and realistic. No dialogue or scene felt forced…ever. I am sooooo ready for book two! (Even though I’ve already read Junior year online hehe).Check, Please was sweet and addictive. It’ll keep you hooked until you get to the last page. In the last page, you’ll scream.

Wow. I was doing some browsing on the Kindle Deals page (my very own daily addiction) and while clicking through some titles I ran into this old friend. I started reading this webseries in the beginning of this year, and like most online serials I binged everything that was available when I first encountered it, then I promptly forgot about it... only to rediscover it months later after there had been many updates. I had no idea that not only had this story been updated, but it had been published (and beautifully so, that hardcover edition is gorgeous!!).It felt only fair to purchase this, read the ending and review it. And if I reread Chapter 18 several times since purchasing the Kindle version, 'tis nobody's business but my own.I loved re-experience the beginning of this comic, seeing how the artwork and character design evolved. For reference, this book ended on chapter 19, and contained the Extras up to that point, as well as Bitty's tweets. So good news is we have more to look forward to!It's funny how the only exposure I have to hockey is through the written word, aka In the Sin Bin (glorious Malec Professional Hockey AU), some assorted FFs and this story - I am not complaining. This is a sweet and fun story about college hockey, friendship and brotherhood, with fluff sprinkled on top like powdered sugar on a pie. And it's available online for free, so like, what are you waiting for?

I've been following this comic for years now but holding the hardcover in my hands was a heartwarming experience. I love the way Bitty's character isn't completely put together. The rollercoaster that can be a college freshman's first year away from home is beautifully illustrated while giving a rosy look into the wonderful world of hockey. While some of the early art is a little unpolished, it is lovely to see how not just the characters, but also the artist, has grown throughout the series. To 'clean up' the first panels is to erase the hard work and refinement of skill that has gone into their craft. I would hate to lose that history and original charm.I also appreciate the representation of queer characters. They are not overly stereotyped or dramatized for their orientation. They simply... are. They exist and fall in love and and still go about their lives. So much of mainstream media seems to forget that a person's orientation is not their only hobby. Who they fall in love with is only a facet of who they are and there is so much more to know and learn about them. The author does a beautiful job of balancing on the tightrope of representation without baiting dramatization. I wish more people were able to handle this topic as elegantly as Ngozi Ukazu. This story only gets better as Bitty and the boys grow. I cannot wait for the next installments to be available in hardback so I can proudly add them to my shelves!

The three axes model is a game changer for political discourse, but the first edition of the book wasn't all that clear. There were actually introductions and explanations by other bloggers that I thought conveyed the ideas more effectively than Kling does in his book. That's no longer the case, the second edition is much better than the first. It's nearly three times as long (146 pages vs the original edition's 54), and more importantly gets the ideas across better. And that's important because this is a very important idea, one that -- if read by everyone -- would lead to much more understanding all around.

Arnold Kling is a Cato Institute Adjunct Scholar, a Mercatus Center affiliate, and regularly posts to his askblog site. His book: The Three Languages of Politics is a short essay and analysis of political speech in the United States.Kling identifies three ideological groups and their dominant dichotomies. Progressives divide issues along an oppressor–oppressed axis. Conservatives use a civilized–barbarous axis. And libertarians, Kling’s camp, use a freedom–coercive axis.He goes on to say that individuals in each camp use political language divided along these axes to show loyalty, elevate status, and create hostility towards others in opposing camps.Political debate using these preferred axes is frustrating and endless as each camp talks past the other without communicating.A debater might either aim to: open minds of those in opposition, open minds of those in their camp, or close the minds of those in their camp. The majority opt for the third option.Uncharitable discussion focuses on finding an opponent’s weakest argument and denouncing it.Few participants attempt to be charitable and end up narrowing and reducing their audience’s understanding of the issues at hand.In the course of argumentation, Kling observes, we suggest we are reasonable and our opponent is not. The only people we are qualified to call unreasonable [or other derogatory terms] are ourselves. Our opponents may be wrong, however, and it is our burden to prove it [which is often hard or impossible].Kling suggests we treat these ideologies as languages to be understood and not heresies to be stamped out.Learning the language of other camps enables us to understand how others think about political issues without demonizing their positions or them.Constructive reasoning weighs the merits of facts and theories to take a stand on an issue. Motivated reasoning filters the facts and theories to legitimate preconceived opinions.Engaging in motivated reasoning is like arguing a case at law. We present evidence to justify or reinforce already accepted ideas. Openness only extends to those facts and theories that support our views.Kling concludes that constructive reasoning applies an equal standard to evidence that supports or contradicts our preconceptions. We become open to changing our minds.

There is a lot, lot, lot, lot of practical information in this small book. The author does not talk over you head, he breaks everything down for the reader. I'm a Progressive. This book did not change my views, but it allowed me to understand other viewpoints. This prevents me from stereotyping others as stupid or selfish. The Conservatives and Libertarians have valid viewpoints as well. He sites many examples where in any one situation all three views were valid. Understanding others has calmed my anger toward others that don't share my views. I bought both the Kindle and paperback versions.

Although Mr. Kling is associated with the libertarian think tank, the Cato Institute, he is very even-handed in describing the three languages in politics: libertarianism, conservatism and progressivism. Though a quick read at 87 pages, he goes in depth to give examples of the frameworks by which each of the three groups see the world and it seems pretty accurate to me. In doing so, he makes a point of asserting that none of the three groups have bad intentions in their approaches, it is just how they see the world and this book is intended to help each of us talk to our friends and family that may not be in our "tribe".I have two minor criticisms: (1) While I - and others - have a primary language/tribe, on certain issues I see the world more from the perspective of one of the other tribes, so am I a hybrid or a centrist? He really does not address those of us who do not march in lockstep and (2) He really does not address how the issue of ineptness and corruption in both major political parties (dominated usually by the party in power) fits into all this. There are many of us from all tribes who feel the system is corrupt and inept in that the views of the majority on many issues do not prevail---I understand in a pluralistic society there is a need to protect the rights of those in the minority on certain issues, but it does not seem like majority rule anymore. That said, a worthwhile read that will make think...and in the future take time to think before deciding.

It looks like most political commentators are just talking past one another. Why? Arnold Kling hazards a guess, arguing that people don't understand one another because they have fundamentally different visions of how the world works. According to Kling, conservatives see the world as a conflict between civilization and barbarism, liberals see it as a conflict between oppressors and the oppressed, and libertarians see it as a conflict between liberty and power.Kling is clear that he is offering a hypothesis rather than an exhaustive empirical study. It is a short and easy read, and it is one that (I expect) will help us make sense of political history and the political present. The Three Languages of Politics

Dr. Kling eloquently describes why most politically inclined folks fall prey to the fast thinking that more often than not comes from our polarized media. Only with slow thinking can we start to make progress in some of the most troublesome issues that malign our society. If we avoid the talking head noise and the bluster of those entrenched in their chosen tribe, we can start to see a reasoned reality from which understanding and progress take root.

What in the actual heck did I just read? This series hasn’t been romance focused from the off – they have each had a little romance thrown in, but it was never the focus – but this was on a different level. I am not sure how I feel about anything I read in this book. I was partially disappointed, because I didn’t learn anything new about The Elite, and partly fascinated by how unwell Sebastian was.Sebastian was at the very least a sociopath, at most he was criminally insane and wholly disconnected with reality. He was obsessive and terrifying in a way I didn’t expect after what we’d seen of him in the other books. It was that apparent mask in combination with his actions and thoughts in Envy that made me sure of his sociopathic state. As much as the others nebulously identified with their sins, Sebastian embodied envy. He couldn’t appreciate anything he had because he was too busy desiring what others possessed.I was disappointed with this book, though, because it didn’t develop my understanding of The Elite any further. There was something I had already suspected confirmed in Envy, but nothing new. All of the Elite interactions had already been hashed out in the previous novels, so it felt repetitive by the time we read it here.I wish this book had been a little more involved. I felt like everything was very much limited to surface details when we could have got a much more intense and fulfilling story had it been longer and really delved into Sebastian’s mental deficiencies. Envy had the potential for excellence but ended up falling short because it felt so rushed.Envy is the fourth book in the Elite Seven series. Each book in the series is written by a different author, about a different sin, with different characters, but to get the complete picture of what is going on at St. Augustine’s with The Elite, the series will need to be read in its entirety.

Get ready to ride the crazy train with Envy. Sebastian is a very complex young man. All he wants is to find a woman who will fall madly in love with him unconditionally. Sounds like a real charmer, right? WRONG, he is a lunatic that has some very dark and dangerous ways about him. You never know what is going on his head. You will get a closer look into exactly what he has been up to and all that it affects. Sabella,is the object of his obsession. Will he make her fall for him? This story is packed with mystery and intrigue. Not all is as it seems especially dealing with one who is off the rails. What impact will Sebastian make on himself and the others in The Elite Seven? This book blew me away. I wasn't expecting how this story was going to go down. It was depraved, twisted, and left me on the brink of insanity (in a good way). I can't wait to see what happens next in this exceptional series.

A dark tale that will reveal some truths. Questions will be answered, but the dynamic within the Elite Seven will irrevocably change. Loss, betrayal and obsession will tear their world apart.Sebastian was raised by his aunt and uncle after he lost his parents. A home that provided anything he wanted, but never love or affection. Now love and affection has become all he thinks about. Love from the perfect woman.Sabella has become his sole focus. She’s too sweet to avoid him, so she puts him in the friend zone. She thinks that will keep him in check, but she has no idea who she’s dealing with. This story was nothing that I expected. It’s dark and twisted. I found it to be a quick read that will leave you wondering, “What the hell just happened?”. I am eager to read the next book in the series to find out more.

M.N. Forgy, you have got yourself a new stalker.. uhh I mean reader here!!My adrenaline was pulsing throughout this story!!Finally some answers!!!!Envy, is a top read for sure! Forgy really gets into a jaded mindset with Sebastian. I did not see him or how this turned out coming. At all. I’m beyond shooketh.Call me crazy but Sebastian was amazing! He was a shadow lurking. Poor guy just wanted some love and friendships! I’m slightly sad his story isn’t ending paired up like the last Elite Seven stories. You definitely have to read all previous stories to understand this one better. But trust me. Stick with it. Because this book will have you frothing at the mouth demanding more. It’s worth it!!

The Elite Seven Just Took An Even Darker Turn And We Have Sebastian Westbrook To Blame For It.All I Know When I Saw Words The End I Was Basically Stunned. I Can’t Wait To See Where Book Five Goes But I’m Sure It Will Be Another Shocker

Whoa! This book is a complete mind f@ck!! Sebastian is the epitome of his sin Envy, he wants for nothing but craves everything. I don't even know what to make of him. On one hand I can understand how he could be the way he is but dang he is really kinda evil. I look forward to the last 3 books to get closure to his story.

5 CRAZY DARK STARS!! Envy is crazy, dark, sexy and dangerous. Sebastian is crazy about Sabella and being part of the elite, he will do whatever it takes. I was glued to this book, it was so dark and mesmerizing. This series has been phenomenal, you definitely need to read these books.

3.5 ⭐⭐⭐Envy definitely was different from the first 3 books in this series and falls into the darker side of sin. Although I enjoyed reading it, I really was like "who is Sebastian". He is tough character that is obsessively Envious for the one thing he can find.

My wife and I are both veteran Elementary teachers - our bar was pretty high. We have seen a lot of these over the decades. We were not disappointed whatsoever. Great Product that is truly academic but not above the level that it shlould be for the target audience. We will be asking my Principal for a class set of these gems ! You should have one in your home.

This is a nice compliment to the dictionary by the same company. We hope to teach our children how to use books the "old fashioned" way without always relying in the Internet (which is very useful but has it's place). This is easy to use.

We purchased the American Heritage Dictionary for a class of second-graders, and this thesaurus is a great supplement. It offers a clear explanation at the beginning of the book of its use. Each entry word is followed by the italicized part of speech under which it is classified, followed by a sentence using the word. You are then offered usually a small list of synonyms. There are boxes on the pages, pretty much at random, which give word groups relating to some subject area (a hotel, for instance). Everything is geared towards elementary comprehension, without being dumbed down.If I were offering a thesaurus to a middle school child, I might tend to reach for either a more advanced version by American Heritage, or the excellent American Education Publishing's Children's Thesaurus. But the most important thing is to give the child the opportunity to find the right word and to learn that the verbal toolbox can be as precise as one which tunes a rocket engine.

The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

Really disappointed. I can't tell you how many times we can't find the word we are looking for. By the time your kids need a thesaurus, they are going to need something more substantial than this.

This works so well for our classroom here at home. My kids love the pictures and it's used more to just browse I think than for actual work.

Isn't a thesaurus supposed to have synonyms and antonyms? Well, this books has synomyms only! Had I know that I wouldn't have bought it. Now I need to buy another huge book for antonyms.

I use this book in my classroom to help my student find other ways to express themselves. happy I bought it.
