"Haunting ... [Blood Water Paint] does not read like historical fiction. It teems with raw emotion, and McCullough deftly captures the experience of learning to behave in a male-driven society and then breaking outside of it."—The New Yorker "An impassioned, lushly described account of a young woman who refuses to dwell in secret shame. Blood Water Paint fits smoothly into the current conversation surrounding the #MeToo movement."—Chicago Tribune"Coming out of the novel, I knew I would be haunted and empowered by Artemisia’s story for the rest of my life."—Amanda Lovelace, bestselling author of the princess saves herself in this one"Tragically relevant and unflinchingly feminist, Blood Water Paint is the kind of book all historical fiction should aspire to be."—Mackenzi Lee, New York Times bestselling author of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue★"McCullough has managed to vividly capture a singularly brave, resilient feminist who became an icon during a time when women had almost no agency. I've always loved history and historical fiction, but never has a book evoked such a powerful emotional resonance of what it was like to exist back in those times, especially for a woman. The stories Artemisia is told and tells are haunting and empowering and relevant today. A truly incredible feat of writing, allowing a story that seems so far off to hit me and connect me to a universal female experience. Plus, I loved having stories and emotion behind the incredible paintings Artemisia painted. Like, I was thrown electrifying feels AND learned something?I wish I'd read this in high school when we had to learn about the Renaissance. I hope one day it is.

I stayed up too late last night, but I absolutely had to finish this amazing book. BLOOD WATER PAINT is a book that I will never forget. The way this woman (and so many women throughout history) managed to persist and find her own voice and the courage to use it...against all the odds... it took my breath away. As we work to end the culture that allows for sexual abuse and domestic violence to persist, I will be holding the story of Artemisia and all survivors close to my heart. We must listen to their voices.

BLOOD WATER PAINT is one of those stories that grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go. I already know it's going to be one of those books I'll come back to again and again, the kind that you hold onto and let the words and truths wash over you, because this book, a historical account of Artemisia's rape and subsequent trial--but more importantly her strength and the power one's voice has--is an important one, written in a manner that is both beautiful and accessible. The verse format allows for maximum emotional impact, but it gives the space we need to process the horrors. Artemisia's story is one I wasn't familiar with but now it's one that I couldn't imagine not knowing. I'm telling everyone I know--you NEED to read this book!

"And listen to me, love. When a woman risks her place, her very life to speak a truth the world despises? Believe her. Always."As a lover of art history, as a teacher, as an artist, and as a woman, I loved this book. I long for, and so rarely find, books that tell the stories of art, of artists, as creative non-fiction. This definitely fit the bill, and was an easy and quick read.It tells the story of 17 year old Artemisia Gentileschi, an "apprentice" artist at a time when women did not become such, her apprenticeship mostly a screen for her father to take credit for her work. Although it takes place over 500 years ago, it could have happened yesterday, or happen still next week, and but for a few 17th century Roman details we wouldn't know the difference. This story is told two-fold: as the biblical stories of two women that were the bases for two of Artemisia's more famous paintings told by her mother and written in prose, and as Artemisia lives and tells her own story in beautifully written free verse. The storytelling is exquisite and the story itself terrifying and infuriating and beautiful and sad. What I want you to know is this: Artemisia Gentileschi is known now for the event(s) described in this book. Maybe if not for it, we wouldn't even know this woman or her work so it is hard to separate the Artist from the victim. That being said, regardless, she isn't only to be studied by art historians because she was one of the finest (and only) female artists recognized at the time, but because she is one of the finest artists of her time, and possibly ours.As a sometimes art history teacher, I introduce Judith and Artemisia on day one in my class. When I teach her, I introduce the story of Judith and Holofernes first. There are many depictions of this story throughout history, and I show several different works to illustrate the time periods and styles through this single subject (maybe 7 art works). My students do the standard compare and contrast, try to identify the style, try to organize them chronologically, etc etc. The last thing I ask is "Which of these was painted by a woman?" They have five minutes to think about it, write down their answer, and defend it with their why. When we share the responses, it is always so interesting to see how the students choose. Let's break down our assumptions and biases on day one, and take the time to really see the art.I ask you, as you read, or after... Look at all the Susannas that were painted, and all the different Judiths. The great and powerful and talented men who painted these women, and then look at Artemisia Gentileschis."I will show you what a woman can do."

An exceptional book, the true story of Artemisia Gentileschi, an extraordinarily talented 17-year old girl living and painting in a society that didn't value girls (sound familiar?). Timely and timeless. Artemisia is inspiring for her fortitude and for speaking truth, but this story doesn't shy away from an honest look at what happens when we speak. Important concepts throughout, but told in a beautiful way. The writing is a joy to read, so much poetry. Yet the story unfolds quickly, which is not always the case with beautiful writing. Nathanial Hawthorne said, "Easy reading is damned hard writing." That is true here. We are clearly in good hands with McCullough, and I'll definitely read whatever she writes next.

I have been working my way through Amazon's collection of English cozy mysteries and came across the English Garden Mysteries. I will give you one warning, if you are not a fan of gardens I don't know that you will enjoy these books. Each book in the series involves a garden, plants, and garden tours. Plus the hero of the book was a botany professor and tends to get very pedantic and go on and on about gardens and/or plants at times which is why this got a 4 instead of a 5. On the other hand the mysteries are well written. I love the look at historic homes and gardens that you get in each book, and it is generally a very good way to spend a few hours.

Retired Botanist, Lawrence Kingston, does it again. After plumbing the depths of history and Sturminister Gardens our sleigh cracks the codes and riddles of centuries past to reveal the murderer. But in the end it goes way beyond simple murder. Eglin sets up the story in a beautiful way. I was captivated page after page. Eglin is remarkable as a mystery writer. His style and technique make the reader keep coming back for more.

One of the things that stops me reading a mystery series is that the puts himself or anyone else in harm's way unnecessarily. Therefore I was disappointed that this was the case in this book. He surely could have figured out another option if he'd been more patient.

Anthony Eglin has created another garden mystery that is as mysterious and well written as the previous English Garden Mysteries. This tale surrounds a few deaths (of course) and a trail to break the code that holds the secret to past scandals. Not only does the reader get a great mystery, but we also get the details of how codes are created and code breaking techniques which adds the icing to the cake.

Anthony Eglin has done it again with his latest book. This story kept me intrigued and I didn't want this "garden mystery" to end. The garden descriptions and the English scenes are vividly portrayed. The characters are memorable especially my favorite, the "professor". And his romantic interest in this story gives another twist to the plot.I've read all the others, but I think this might be my favorite - until the next book!

My husband loves mysteries from Europe...especially before DNA and the high tech age we live in now. He thoroughly enjoyed and read it until he finished it.

It was good, intelligent writing with a good plot and development. Not especially strong in character development. It was interesting enough to keep reading.

If you love gardening, love England, & enjoy mysteries, like his others, a good read. Still enjoy his descriptive language /vocabulary.

Review

"One of the most ironic, intelligent, grimly funny voices to comment on life in present-day America . . . [White Noise] poses inescapable questions with consummate skill."--Jayne Anne Phillips, The New York Times Book Review"DeLillo's eighth novel should win him wide recognition as one of the best American noveslists. . . . the homey comedy of White Noise invites us into a world we're glad to enter. Then the sinister buzz of implication makes the book unforgettably disturbing."--Newsweek "A stunning book . . . it is a novel of hairline prophecy, showing a desolate and all-too-believable future in the evidence of an all-too-recognizable present. . . . Through tenderness, wit, and a powerful irony, DeLillo has made every aspect of White Noise a moving picture of a disquiet we seem to share more and more."--Los Angeles Times "It's brilliance is dark and sheathed. And probing. In White Noise, Don DeLillo takes a Geiger-counter reading of the American family, and comes up with ominous clicks."--Vanity Fair"A stunning performance from one of our most intelligent novelists . . . Tremendously funny."--The New Republic

I am a "lapsed humanities major" turned technological "knowledge worker." I have been trying to find brief and accessible novels to read that (despite their brevity and simplicity) still have some high literary quality, so that by squeezing such reading into my spare time, I can hopefully avoid turning into a uni-faceted number-crunching robot of a tech worker. This book was wonderful. It met all my criteria. It is a quick and enthralling read, and it stimulates deep thinking about the nature of family, career, life, culture, etc.I found parts of the book to be screamingly hilarious, but definitely in a dark-humor way.A notable fact: this book has the best DIALOGUE i ever recall reading in any novel. ever. The dialogue between husband and wife, and between other family members and characters, is both true-to-life (by being awkward, stumbling, flawed) and also just slightly hyper-real, just slightly over-the-top in its weighted, unspoken implications and tension. My fondness for this book continued to grow after I finished reading it. For several weeks afterward, I would find myself in real-life situations that reminded me of moments in the novel, and this deepened my appreciation for what an excellent job Delillo did in capturing the idiosyncrasies of modern life. Truth is stranger than fiction. Even the very strange fiction in White Noise. Here is the only thing that I *discourage* you from doing with regard to this book: please, please, please do *not* read the introduction. (If you receive the 25th anniversary edition that I received, there is a 10 page introduction by a separate author.)Reading the introduction inhibited my enjoyment of this book. The introduction is ridiculously academic. It cross-references this novel with Mephistopheles, Borges, and Gnosticism, and uses phrases like "brilliant palette of estrangement" and "fusing inimical styles into something sui generis." What? What the serious what? After getting bogged down in the intellectuality of the introduction, I spent the first several chapters of the book trying to relate any of Delillo's prose with *anything* mentioned in the introduction. It was an exhausting distraction. I finally detached myself from the introduction, and from then on I truly fell in love with this novel.

OK, so I came to this one kind of late, it was written way back in 1985 after all, quite a different world then, but I loved the spot-on irony and profuse dead-pan humor, the innocent sarcasm of DeLillo's beleaguered characters. I have always admired the author's diagnostic ability regarding American zeitgeist. Perhaps it budded here and bloomed with Underworld in 1997.The White Noise of the title refers of course to so much radio and TV chatter (waves and radiation), ubiquitous consumer ads and grocery products, and the general mishegas expounded and discussed by many of his characters; but the term is also offered as a conjecture for death. What is death like, wonder university professor Jack Gladney (who spearheads a department of Hitler studies) and his fourth wife Babbette (whose "fanatical blond mop" of hair and ample size give her "a certain seriousness"), could it all be nothing but a steady hiss of noise forever and ever? After an entire episode parodying a catastrophic massive chemical leak which is eventually dubbed The Airborne Toxic Event, DeLillo logically ties in the theme of thanatophobia (death anxiety), but subsequently throws in a few twists here and there, involving pharmaceuticals and German nuns. You can see flashes here of the author's later work as he seems often to: veer off topic, use non-sequitur and absurdist plot, yet with strong characterizations and interlacing motifs, satisfactorily link everything together in time for his ultimate scene.

That is the question posed but perhaps not answered.I was mesmerized by the language and completely charmed by the dialogue -- especially conversations between the protagonist (Jack) and his young son, Heinrich, who often enough seems to be the parent rather than the child.“It’s going to rain tonight,” says Heinrich in the car on the way to school.“It’s raining now,” says Jack.(Long descriptive paragraph about driving him to school in the rain).“Look at the windshield,” Jack says. “Is that rain or isn’t it?”“I’m only telling you what they said.”(Long descriptive paragraph on the unreliability of our senses).“Is it raining,” Jack says, “or isn’t it?”“I wouldn’t want to have to say.”“What if someone held a gun to your head?”“Who, you?”“Someone.”Long two sided satirical conversation between father and son on rain, truth, philosophy, sophistry, solar systems, the elusiveness of time, language as illusion, uncertainty and chaos, ending with:“I watched him walk through the downpour to the school entrance.”If you’ve ever raised a willful child (meaning hard-headed, smart and contrary), this conversation will ring true and hilarious. The children in this book are bright, watchful, intuitive, joyful and disarming. They reveal what the essence of life should be, I think, while the adults muddle their way in and out of their paranoid fear of death; they are the children -- afraid of the dark. This book is not exactly a romp, though it is very funny in parts. I loved it, not for its wisdom, not for its meditation on death or the answer to death – existentialism, but for the free exploration into the nature of modern society, the “white noise” and how that noise may ultimately distract us from our most important goal in life – to figure out what it’s all about.
