About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were already successful cartoonists for magazines and adult humor books when they began writing children's books. The first story starring the bear family, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962. Since then, more than 340 Berenstain Bears books have been published, and more than 260 million copies have been sold. What began as an idea sparked by their young sons' interest in children's books has become over the years arguably the best-selling children's book series ever. Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000. Since Stan's death at age eighty-two in 2005, Jan and Mike have continued to write and illustrate wonderful new adventures for Mama, Papa, Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear. They live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which looks a lot like Bear Country.

My son LOVES Berenstain bears! Loves them. We have at least 75% of the books, some from when I was a kid. I loved them so much I kept them hoping to read them to my children. Having said that, this one seems out of place in the Berenstain series. The bears look slightly different, like maybe a different artist did it? the message is super strange, basically, mom gets tired of the kids & papa bear not helping around the house so she stops cleaning or doing any kind of chore around the house until they are living in a pit.Picture bugs in the bathtub & dishes piled up in the sink etc.. Finally papa & the kids get tired of living in a filthy house & decide to clean. The strangest part however is the fact that the dog poops regularly in the house throughout the book,... No joke! There are at least 2, maybe 3 pictures of steamy piles of doo in the house. The authors also write that it is a chore to pick up the "leavings" of the dog...in the house! What?! My son totally noticed & was super grossed out. This was the strangest Berenstain Bear book I have ever seen.

As with most Berenstein Bear books, it teaches children important lessons. The lessons here are that one person shouldn't have to do all the work to keep up a house because it's too much, and also, if the house is not kept up it becomes very unpleasant to live in - both great lessons! As always, it was colorful and had cute illustrations too! Perfect for young children and middle-school aged children too!

My kids (ages 3, 5, and 7) and I all love any of the Berenstain Bears books, and this was no exception. It is a good reminder that everybody needs to do their chores, and I am not a mean mom for making my kids do theirs :)

Whether you like the Christian undertones of the Berenstain Bears or not, the books themselves have some great lessons to be learned. My 5 year old loves these books. We rent all we can from the library and buy the ones he has to hear over and over. Great way to help explain things to kids in a way that is not lecturing. Yes some can get a bit heavy on the religious side, but not all do and if that is not your thing the basic chores, manners, bullies, etc. books are a good buy.

I love all the Berenstein Bears books. They can provide a good starting point for a conversation with your child. Don't look to these books for answers on how to handle a problem. They aren't meant for that.In this one, we see what happens when Mama gets tired of everyone else avoiding their chores, so she avoids hers, too. Once the others see what the house is like, they start to pitch in to help. This book started a good discussion between me and my 7 year old about what chores are and why we should do them. We talked about Mama Bear's feelings when Papa and the cubs didn't do their chores. We also talked about what happened to the tree house when Mama quit doing her chores and how that made everyone else feel. These are great books for reading anytime and are easy for my child to read alone and understand.

Stan & Jan Berenstain's classic Berenstain Bears stories were personal favorites throughout my childhood, and now I use them often, whether for reading to young children or for teaching English to older children and adults. Not only are they beautifully illustrated, consistently humorous, and full of educational content. They also teach morals and provide guidelines for social interaction in a way that's neither patronizing, nor puerile, nor pedantic. 'The Trouble With Chores' specifically addresses the problems most of us have managing our time with respect to menial tasks, but focuses on a family approach to such an issue. Note that this book was published in 2005, fairly late in the Bears series when the family includes Honey bear, the baby sister of Brother and Sister bear (just in case you've already read some Berenstain Bear books and do not wish to be surprised by this addition).

our family has always loved these books, i like that they made a series as well but sometimes is nice to just snuggle up with the little ones and read these. perfect condition, excellent price

I'm a longtime fan of the Berenstain Bears and have a huge collection that my 4 and 5 year olds now enjoy. I purchased some new books for the collection, and this was one of them. I really liked the point they were making, but the drawings didn't look like the Bears I'm used to. I'm assuming this might have been one of the last books before Stan passed away, so maybe that is why they don't look quite right. Otherwise, I appreciated the message that everyone needs to pitch in to help mom keep the house clean.

A lot more information and character examination of two immensely influential women, outliers of their time, precursors of modern women. Also a lot of information about the Romantic poets, artists writers and philosophers they knew and lived with, and the historical eras they lived through, which gives a lot more clear and un romanticized versions of their characters and actions, while still giving much about their contributions to art and society.I found this to be an actual page turner of a book, even knowing much about their lives already. Extremely well written. Liked the structure of parallel chapters, alternating between mother and daughter over their separate generations, relationships and cultural history. I have already sent this book to a friend who loved it and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in these women, these time periods, and the history of arts and social philosophy in the West.

This dual biography of Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter Mary Shelley utterly enthralled me. Both were talented, groundbreaking, independent thinking women, they each had drama and difficulties in their lives worthy of a Brontë novel, and between them they knew intimately some of the most interesting people involved with Romantic literature and radical political thought from the French Revolution through to the mid-Victorian years.Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was born into a poor family with a very difficult, sometimes violent father, but Wollstonecraft was at least as spirited as he was and she struggled to surmount the boundaries gender and poverty put on her life in every way she could, eventually becoming a leading progressive thinker and the author of several influential books, including A Vindication of the Rights of Women. She loved passionately but refused the traditional roles women were expected to embrace at the time, so she married the political philosopher William Godwin late in life and only reluctantly. Wollstonecraft died days after giving birth to the daughter named for her, so it was through her extensive writings that Mary Godwin Shelley came to esteem, cherish, and love her mother. While still a teenager Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein, a social commentary many consider the first science fiction novel, while holed up in Switzerland with a crowd that included Lord Byron. Like her parents she rejected social conventions about love, life, and marriage and at sixteen she scandalized her more staid contemporaries by running away with the already married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, though that particular rebellion she came to regret because it hurt so many people. Mary longed for and looked up to her mother, using her mother's writings as guideposts for her own life, and that reverence was shared by her husband, her stepsister, Lord Byron, and many of Mary's other peers.Romantic Outlaws is written in a back and forth chronology, with chapters about the two women alternating, so the section about Wollstonecraft's early life is followed by one about her daughter at a similar age. I thought this might be confusing, especially since they're both named Mary, but their circumstances were different enough that it was usually simple to keep track of who I was reading about, and structuring the book that way makes it easy to compare the lives of the women, which adds even more interest to their stories. The book is well researched and documented with notes, but far from being a dry recitation of facts I found it quite compelling. Many of the chapters even end in what might almost be called cliffhangers, a technique that definitely kept me highly engaged. Before reading this biography both Marys were more symbols to me than women with families, lovers, personal trials and private doubts, but Charlotte Gordon illuminates the hearts and minds of her subjects and succeeds at bringing the two women and the era they lived in to life. William Godwin, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron are among the people who are also well rendered, and many other fascinating people spend time on the book's pages, including Coleridge, Keats, and John and Abigail Adams.Saying it's engrossing is almost an understatement--I don't remember ever finding a biography so hard to put down. I read an advanced review ebook copy of this book supplied by the publisher through NetGalley, but I've already preordered my own copy hardback edition of Romantic Outlaws.

This contrast/comparison of mother/daughter Wollstonecraft/Shelley is compelling. The book would have benefitted from excising repetitions of the tangential characters, such as Godwin, or the Williams’. We didn’t need to be convinced several times that either Trelawny or Jane Williams slandered Mary’s actual talents and character in order to overstate their own importance in the lives of P. B. Shelley or Byron. The sharp focus on Mary S is compelling enough in Gordon’s analysis and factual material, and this became cluttered with repetition on Fuseli, e.g., Trelawny, Mary-Jane, and Claire. Gordon set herself a gargantuan task (ironically, like Mary S organizing Percy’s papers and biography), tell us less about the incidental figures. There is one more thing to note: we needed to be reminded at least twice that Mary’s terror about Percy’s obsession with sailing was rooted in knowing he had never learned how to swim. As his fatal run back home across the lake nears, this crucial detail is not mentioned at all. Instead, we spend too much time with the repeating of Mary’s doomsday pre-sentiments.

The author went into great length to bring back to life the context in which both women lived. It's absolutely fascinating and sometimes horrifying to read about how the social, economical, cultural, and political factors of each of their lives end up shaping their views on liberty and women's rights that still resonate today. If you wish to read a book that you simply cannot put down, this is the one.

In the spirit of identifying the most significant new theories and discoveries, John Brockman, publisher of Edge.org (“The world’s smartest website”—The Guardian), asked 198 of the finest minds What do you consider the most interesting recent scientific news? Know This: Today’s Most Interesting and Important Scientific Ideas, Discoveries, and Developments (Edge Question) by John Brockman“Know This” is a thought-provoking book of essays brought to you by the by The Edge that provides readers with better tools to think about the world. The Edge is an organization that presents original ideas by today's leading thinkers from a wide spectrum of scientific fields. The 2017 Edge question is, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?” This interesting thorough 608-page book includes 198 essays from the brightest minds. For my sake, I created a spreadsheet of all the essays and graded them from zero to five stars based on quality. Five star essays are those that provide a great description of the author's favorite scientific concept. On the other hand, those receiving a one or even a zero represent essays that were not worthy of this book. Of course, this is just one reviewer's personal opinion. I basically reprised the same formula I used to review, "This Explains Everything" and “This Will Make You Smarter”.Positives:1. This series by "The Edge" always deliver a high-quality product.2. A great topic, “What do you consider the most interesting recent (scientific) news? What makes it important?”3. A great range of scientific essays provided by subject matter experts.4. There were a number of outstanding essays deserving of five stars for me. I will list my favorites as positives in this review. In order of appearance, the first by Steven Pinker, “Human Progress Quantified”. Makes the compelling case that the world is actually getting better. “Human intuition is a notoriously poor guide to reality.”5. Richard Muller’s “The Greatest Environmental Disaster”. “Someday global warming may become the primary threat. But it is air pollution that is killing people now. Air pollution is the greatest environmental disaster in the world today.”6. Donald D. Hoffman’s “The Abdication of Spacetime”. “Nathan Seiberg, of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, said, “I am almost certain that space and time are illusions. These are primitive notions that will be replaced by something more sophisticated.”7. Seth Lloyd’s “One Hundred Years of Failure”. “Encouragingly, the advances in quantum gravity supplied by quantum-information theory do not yet seem to be counterbalanced by backsliding elsewhere.”8. Brian G. Keating’s “Looking Where the Light Isn’t”. Excellent essay. “The next century of general relativity promises to be as exciting as the first. “Spacetime tells matter how to move; matter tells spacetime how to curve,” said John Archibald Wheeler. We’ve seen what the curvature is. Now we just need to find out what’s the matter. And where better to look for lost matter than where the dark is.”9. Neil Turok’s “Simplicity”. “Such a theory won’t be concerned with kilograms, meters, or seconds, only with information and its relations. It will be a unified theory not only of all the forces and particles but also of the universe as a whole.”10. Steve Giddings’s “New Probes of Einstein’s Curved Spacetime—and Beyond?”. “The community has been abuzz about the possible discovery of a new particle at the LHC, seen by its disintegration into pairs of photons. If this is real and not just a fluctuation, there’s a slim chance it is a graviton in extra dimensions, which, if true, could well be the discovery of the century.”11. Rudy Rucker’s “The Universe Is Infinite”. “Many cosmologists now think our spatial universe is infinite.”12. Gregory Benford’s “Pluto Now, Then on to 550 AU”. “New Horizons is important not just for completing our first look at every major world in the solar system. It points outward, to a great theater in the sky, where the worlds of the galaxy itself are on display.”13. “Scott Aaronson’s “How Widely Should We Draw The Circle?” “By letting us simulate quantum physics and chemistry, quantum computers might spark a renaissance in materials science, and allow (for example) the design of higher-efficiency solar panels.”14. John Tooby’s “The Race Between Genetic Meltdown and Germline Engineering” “Natural selection is the only physical process that pushes species’ designs uphill—against entropy, toward greater order (positive selection)—or maintains our favorable genes against the downward pull exerted by mutation pressure (purifying selection).”15. Eric Topol’s “The 6 Billion Letters of Our Genome”. “So the biggest breakthrough in genomics—Science’s 2015 Breakthrough of the Year—is the ability to edit a genome, via so-called CRISPR technology, with remarkable precision and efficiency.”16. Juan Eriquez’s “Life Diverging”. “Thus the biggest story of the next few centuries will be how we begin to redesign life-forms, spread new ones, develop approaches and knowledge to further push the boundaries of what lives where.”17. Thalia Wheatley’s “Biology Versus Choice”. “the emergence of perhaps the greatest developing news story: the widespread understanding that human thought and behavior are the products of biological processes.”18. Gino Segre’s “Diversity in Science”. “Science has become increasingly collaborative in a way that makes diversity a paramount necessity.”19. David G. Myers’s “We Fear the Wrong Things”. “The hijacking of our rationality by fears of terrorist guns highlights an important and enduring piece of scientific news: We often fear the wrong things.”20. Oliver Scott Curry’s “Morality Is Made of Meat”. “Morality is natural, not supernatural. We are good because we want to be, and because we are sensitive to the opinions—the praise and the punishment—of others. We can work out for ourselves how best to promote the common good, and with the help of science make the world a better place.”21. Christian Keysers’s “Optogenetics”. “For the first time, we can selectively re-create arbitrary states in the brain—and hence the mind.”Negatives:1. At over 600 pages, it will require an investment of your time.2. Some essays were not worthy of this book. That said, the series has improved and there were very few lemons.3. Lacks visual material to complement the excellent narrative. In summary, I’m a big fan of The Edge. I enjoy essays from great minds covering a wide variety of topics and this one doesn’t disappoint. This has close to 200 essays and it never fails to be provocative and inspirational. The search for knowledge is a fun and satisfying pursuit. Pick up this book and enjoy the ride.Further recommendations: “This Explains Everything: Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works" and “This Will Make You Smarter” by John Brockman, "A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss, "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution" by Richard Dawkins, "The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements" by Sam Kean, "The Tell-Tale Brain: A Neuroscientist's Quest for What Makes Us Human" by V.S. Deep and interesting concepts explained in less than two pages. However, most the time you need a few (many) more pages to do a topic justice. This read more like a quick encyclopedia entry. However, sometimes the full explanation wasn't there and it was more like the author's opinion on a concept. I think the book would better if it took on less concepts (there are dozens) and let the authors take 4-10 pages so it didn't come off as a sophomoric.

A collection of very short essays - enough, in some cases, to whet your appetite - but not much depth or substance. Might be good as an introduction for people who do not follow science at all.

This is the best compilation of essays from some of the worlds most renowned scientists and researchers in the fields of science and technology I have read. If you are looking for a primer on the most current news in the physical and natural sciences, psychology and human behavior, look no further. This is a must read and the best place to start before taking a deeper dive into whatever area or discipline you’re interested in. Definitely 5 stars.

Another great compilation from Brockman!

Fantastic collection of essays by some of the best in the field!

good read

Though of short essays, the range of topics is broad in scope and, mostly, surprisingly interesting.
