Review

“No one has taken this premise to such pitiless lengths--and depths as Watts. . . . In a claustrophobic setting enlivened by periodic flashes of beauty and terror, the crew of Beebe Station come across as not only believable but likeable as they fight for equilibrium against their own demons, one another, their superiors and their remorselessly hostile surroundings.” ―The New York Times“Fizzing with ideas, and glued together with dark psychological tension: an exciting debut.” ―Kirkus Reviews“A powerful first novel. . . . A savage, bitter, and often blackly comic vision of the near future . . . Watts has rendered a character whose emotional complexity demands our respect. . . . [The ending] is both startling and oddly satisfying in its earned nihilism. A terrific debut from an author we will be seeing again.” ―Edmonton Journal“Watts' true enemy is human stupidity, the sort of thing that turns children into walking disaster zones, treats adults as interchangeable things, insists that unchecked fertility is a Good Thing, and blindly trusts that our artificially intelligent creations must share our priorities. As Watts develops that point, he tells an absorbing tale set in a bizarre world and hinging upon intriguing technology. He's done his homework well, and it shows.” ―Analog

Most sci-fi looks at how humans rearrange the environment, often from the standpoint of the damage done. This book flips the premise to humans changing in response to the environment. The transmogrified rifters have had surgical modifications to adapt to working on the ocean floor. As the book progresses the group of misfits undergo surreal acclimatization, they spend more and more time in the water, they can hear each other think, they prefer darkness and bioluminescence to light. As they morph away from human, the author weaves aquatic science and creative fantasy into a haunting tale. The dystopia is relieved by empathy and imagery that tugs at the heart and mind. Unfortunately, life under the sea is only 1/2 the story. The plot explodes on land with a greedy corporation, a power hungry villain and a mealy mouth manager who basically manage to destroy the world (as well as the novel). Along with top heavy tropes that contort the story from above, there are unexplained twists like ancient DNA and some malevolent AI running computers. Easy to see how it would take a trilogy to tie up all the loose ends but the needless complexity also makes it easy to put down. The rifters is a small part of the story but it has the biggest punch. Their struggle is more immediate and the lesson more captivating proving that no matter where explorations lead, (from outer space to the ocean floor), the most challenging frontiers come from within. I might not finish this series but I would certainly read more by this author.

Peter Watts is, if anything, consistent.. The same future dystopia reigns in every novel from the first Rifter Trilogy to Blind Sight / Echopraxia. It is a dismal, soulless mess of biological and technological dreams / nightmares with characters that can only be described as depressingly complex. The same themes appear over and over - intelligence, free will, consciousness, boundaries, purpose and reason.Unlike many authors, Watts eschews lofty power talk from the likes of the Kremlin, UN or White House. His focus is on the middleman - those who are controlled and control others, who both take and give orders. This is a difficult perch due the inherent nuances of such a position and yet this is what he does best. In a world starved for more and more energy, the deep rifts in the oceans are now being exploited. But the cost in human sacrifice is great.STARFISH is the story of one group of workers at the Beebe energy plant. First novels are almost always autobiographical which is the case with this novel. The author worked in the oceans protecting marine life and thus has inside knowledge of the last unexplored place on Earth. The description of the underworld is fascinating but it is the workers that grab our attention. These are greatly modified humans that can withstand the tremendous pressure of the deep and who can remain in the waters for long periods of time due to their internal machinery that allows respiration. The catch is that these individuals must fit a certain psychological baseline and that include sociopaths, pedophiles and abuse victims. But something lurks among the insane crew, an ancient form of life (pre DNA) that threatens the world. . And once its meme enters the Maelstrom (future internet) intelligent monitoring organisms set up to prohibit viruses and malware are drawn to its very simplicity. The reader is in for a bumpy, ride to the future with word twists, technical verbal fireworks, phrases as sentences, competing thoughts and a swirl of condensed, punk writing. My Grade - A1

I wasn't sure what this novel wanted to be. It starts out with a character study of our protagonist, Lenie Clarke, as she adjusts to her surgically altered body and living on the ocean floor near a hydrothermal vent. Then it starts to turn into a bit of a soap opera as other damaged individuals are sent down to Beebe Station to work alongside her. Their personalities clash, people pair up, they argue over their treatment by "drybacks" with their jobs playing a background role. Finally, about 70% of the way through, the plot (the "worldwide disaster" referred to in the blurb) takes shape from a collection of scientific reports covering synthetic minds and ancient life.Watts throws different POVs at us throughout the novel to advance the story. Unlike Clarke, who's there from beginning to end, these other characters come and go. I was surprised at first when the next character POV was introduced one-sixth of the way into the book. Thinking that he was going to be the counterpoint or pivotal in his relationship to Clarke, I was equally surprised when he was shuffled into the background at the one-third point. At first, I wondered what the point was in even having him in the first place, but reasons later revealed themselves in the story. And some of these other characters revealed elements of the overall story that Clarke wasn't privy to.Can't say that I liked the post-climax ending. While I knew when I started this book that there were other books in the series, there was just a bit too much that was left unresolved. Viewed as a standalone, I don't believe it works. If Starfish is intended to be about Clarke's personal growth as she comes to work through the issues of her past (she's an abuse survivor), then I suppose that the worldwide disaster could be considered secondary. But her recovery is put on the backburner for the last third of the book while the plot is developed. Her dynamic change near the end is just too sudden. It almost seems like an afterthought. "Hmmm, gonna need more books to get the plot resolved. Better give Clarke an epiphany so I can end this phase of her story."Still, I liked that Watts tackled several subjects and roped them together. Despite being twenty years old, the ideas presented here are still fresh. The real world internet could still wind up like the one postulated here. His radical approach to AI is untested and plausible. And given his background in biology, much of that aspect of the book is quite believable. The world-building is great. The descriptions of living at the bottom of the ocean splendid. Yes, it's a bleak story with little offered in the way of hope. Maybe that works for you; maybe it doesn't. If anything, it does a good job humanizing those whom society deems incorrigible or expendable.3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I liked it more than my review suggests.

No matter where your family is financially, this book has something to offer you. Part memoir of her family's most hopeless financial season and part mentoring to help those still facing a struggle, Erin's desire is to bring hope and allow God to bless others through their story. As she says, "We walked there so God could use us here."In More Than Just Making It, Erin shares her heart and her experiences with a transparency and vulnerability that let you know you are not alone, and she reminds us that we can trust in God’s provision and His plan in every situation. Her book offers encouragement and inspiration as well as a plethora of simple, actionable strategies and habits for saving money and provides readers with a stocked arsenal of resources to help you go from financial stress to financial success. This is definitely a book that I am highly recommending to all my family and friends.Note: I was privileged to receive an advance copy of the book from Zondervan in exchange for my honest opinion. My positive review is based solely upon on how much I enjoyed this book.

This book. So real and honest. Whether you are at the end of your financial rope and just hanging on, or have come through hard times, this book will speak to you. Erin is both encouraging and practical in this book which is part story and part helpful ways to take a fresh look at your own finances. I personally learned so much about faith and trusting that God does care and have a plan for our lives. That He looks for ways to reach out and bless us so that we are reassured that He is in this with us. On a practical note, it made me look at the wasteful spending (unused gym membership anyone?) and think of better uses for that money (sponsor a child in poverty). Read.this.book!

While this book is kind of a memoir of Erin Odom's journey into the life of the poor and out again, it is much more. It was an education of sorts on poverty and what those living in that state must endure and they endure more than just not enough funds. They endure people judging them without knowing their story. This book was an education for me. And it changed the way I view poverty and those that are living in that state.

Most people subscribe to my newsletter or read my blog to learn about how to improve their health using whole foods nutrition. Most only begin to think about how they should eat after a personal or family health crisis. Erin Odom, author of the new book More Than Just Making It, had a family financial crisis. This book tells the story of their hardships but also encourages the reader to endure their their own hardships through gratitude. “Practicing gratitude in each small gesture will help you go from a mental and emotional state of ‘just barely making it’ to more than just making it—if you let it. For gratitude stills discontentment.” Erin, her husband and her children were a young middle class family. They were college graduates who were hoping to become missionaries when job loss forced them to move. Ultimately they had a house foreclosed upon and they declared bankruptcy. During their long season of low income, they received public assistance through WIC and Medicaid, something which they had looked down upon in their former lives. Erin “started looking at and crediting each and every incident—from the government WIC check to the box of persimmons—as God’s provision for our family. Like manna in the wilderness, the Lord provided again and again and again. As time passed, I saw it more clearly than ever, and looking back, I realize He provided all along”. In addition to the inspirational aspects of the book, Erin includes many practical suggestions for saving money. Readers of this blog will appreciate the chapters on eating well on a budget and meal planning. Erin’s oldest child was diagnosed with gluten-sensitivity at the age of three while they were in the middle of this season of low-income. Many gluten-free food items are significantly more expensive than their wheat-based counterparts, so Erin was understandably apprehensive. She had a friend who purchased gluten-free food to help her daughter, which Erin rightly saw as another provision from God. One of the chapters in the book discusses how Christians and the church often relate to government assistance. She noticed that people who received assistance such as food stamps, Medicaid or WIC were often looked down upon. Erin herself was ashamed and hoped that none of her friends would see her in the grocery store using her WIC checks or going to their Medicaid checkups. But Erin recognized that her “feelings of shame were fueled by pride”. The book does an excellent job of making this relatable and giving the reader the opportunity to also examine their own beliefs and assumptions. I have been examining my own beliefs for the past six months as I volunteer on a weekly basis at Lifechoices Pregnancy Care Center. Almost all of our clients are low-income parents or parents-to-be and are on one or more of these government programs. Erin and her family did not fit the stereotype of those on public assistance, but she encourages the reader “and those of us in the church especially, ...to never put anyone in a box, to never stereotype, to never make assumptions.” Christians, instead, are to see the potential in each person and give them the benefit of the doubt, according to Erin. This is what I pray that I am increasingly learning to do, through resources such as this book as well as my work at Lifechoices. Other chapters in the book give practical advice on budgeting and on creating additional income for the family. Erin describes the difficult process of going through bankruptcy in another chapter. More Than Just Making It would be a particularly useful for any person who is currently going through a financial crisis. This is a huge percentage of Americans, as recent surveys have shown that almost half of adults are living paycheck to paycheck and would have trouble coming up with $400 to meet an emergency. Even beyond those with financial problems, Erin’s book could be helpful for people dealing with any unexpected hardship. As some readers know, I am currently dealing with a personal health issues in my heart. Because I have had healthy eating, exercising and lifestyle practices for so many years, this was quite unexpected. More Thank Just Making It has helped remind me of the many ways God has been providing for me, even through this health challenge. The subtitle of the book is “Hope for the Heart of the Financially Frustrated”. I encourage you to read this book to help give your heart the hope it needs, whatever challenges you are facing.

I loved this book. Erin is an engaging writer that has produced a thought provoking book that brings hope to those struggling financially while also bringing perspective to those who have never faced financial hardship. If you are struggling financially you will enjoy the story of Erin's experiences while finding practical advice for getting control of your finances. If you are someone who has never struggled financially, you will be deeply moved to rethink your views of those who are in this position. I would especially recommend it to those who are in church leadership that make decisions on how to help people in their congregation or community. This is a book for everyone.

I have read a lot of books about living on a tight budget, living on one income, stretching a low income budget, etc. None have been as amazing as More Than Just Making It. Does Erin give practical advice on how to stretch a budget? Absolutely! But she dives far deeper than that. She talks about what it's like to have to go on government aid. She talks about how such financial stress can affect your marriage and family. She gets right to the heart of all that goes into living on a low income. But more than that she gives hope. She explains how you can thrive in times of financial hardship. So often I have lived in that place that Erin talks about in this book. I know that I will be re-reading this book often and recommending/gifting it to those I know who are in a season of financial frustration.(I received an advanced reader copy of this book but all opinions are completely my own.)

Wow! This is the first -- the **first** -- non-intimidating book about homemade mosaics that I've ever seen! The photographs alone are reason enough to buy this book, for they show, step-by-simple-step, **exactly** how each item is made, from materials, to tools, to the process itself, to finished product. In fact, after reading this book and looking at the beautiful photographs, I think that I could actually **make** one of these items! That's saying plenty, because every other book I've seen on the subject scares me silly! Those other books convince me that I could never, **ever** succeed at making even the simplest mosaic. But "Garden Mosaics" author Becky Paton leads me step-by-step, beginning with the basics. For example, she tells me, with an accompanying photo, exactly when I should wear rubber gloves. Then she shows photographs of what a certain mixture will look like when I first put the ingredients together, then what it will look like during the mixing process, and finally, what the mixture will look like when it's ready to use.Step-by-step: that's exactly what I need! Without author Paton's crystal-clear photos and brief, concise instructions, I would never, ever **dream** of trying to make one of these projects on my own.So I'm keeping this book on my living-room table, and each time I look at it, my confidence grows. By golly, this time next year I'll probably be the proud owner of several projects straight outta this book! I've already picked out my first one: an elegant House Number for my gorgeous, recently remodeled, modified Victorian, late 1890's home!

Being new to mosaics, I was excited about this book. It delivers! There are many projects to do from start to finish. It shows the steps with photos for all of the projects and is pretty straight forward. The only negative is that some of the projects lack a little more information. It just needed a little bit more of information on some of the projects, such as the dragonfly. It said to use cement adhesive, but that does not spread smoothly. Is there a specific brand that I should use to get that smooth look? Still haven't found the answer. Anyway, over all this was a good book.

I really like this book. It is easy to follow and the steps are illustrated which makes it easier to learn how to do the projects. I like the fact that some of the projects are 3-D and that I was able to get ideas on how to execute them. They go from very easy to more difficult so there is something for almost everyone.

Informative great book

I love it very much but haven't tried to make anything shown in it yet; however, I do have a lot of ideas for next summer when I plan to start making some long needed changes in our yard and garden areas which total some 2 - 3 acres. I don't know if I'll live long enough to finish the project but I certainly will make a good effort to start!

I glanced through the book before giving as a gift. Looks like some fun and easy stuff there. Maybe I will pop in on my friend and see if I can help with making a project or two.

This book was very informative for people interested in the Art of making mosaics. Artfully done and with beautiful taste. Great instructions and pictures. Very creative and motivational book...

So many ideas!
