God's Great Love for You, by Rick Warren

Review

In simple, lilting language, pastor and author Warren (The Purpose Driven Life) describes God’s love in comparative terms (“Deeper than all the oceans/ Higher than the moon and the stars”) and as something beyond comparison (“God’s great love for you is... perfect. / And everywhere/ And will never end”). It’s a lot to wrap one’s head around, so British illustrator Saunders introduces a wide-eyed, pug-nosed girl as a surrogate and guide. She wears a red dress with a long ribbon that unfurls behind her---a kind of spiritual contrail as she travels the world. Her only companion for most of the book is a plump white dove, but she’s never lonely or afraid, having been assured that she is one of God’s creations and that “he loves you with a great big unstoppable love.” Warren’s name will undoubtedly attract interest; the nondenominational, monotheistic language offers broad appeal; and there are some striking images, such as an ant’s-eye view of the girl in a hot-air balloon soaring above. But for the most part, the book is more pleasant than revelatory. (Publishers Weekly)

This is a hardback book for younger children. The illustrations are nicely done, colorful and very attractive. There are really not many words on each page. The highest I counted was 11 and that was only one place in the book. The rest of the pages probably averaged 3-6 large size words. It talks about how God's great love is created the world and everything including "you". Then goes on to mention how God's great love is with you - where and when. The main character is the little girl on the front, which is super cute by the way, except to me it kind of makes the book a little "girlish". You know geared toward girls. I don't really think that is the authors intent, but she is on almost every page and there was only one page with a boy. I have a boy... so I know how boys might think (smile).Overall, I think the book is beautiful! It would make a really wonderful gift for a special little one in your life. On a side note, there is one missing fact and that is that God loved us so much He sent His son to save us. For that I can only give it 4 stars instead of 5 - Knowing about God's love is amazing, but knowing what He is willing to do because He loves us is even more amazing.I was blessed to receive a copy of this book courtesy of Zonderkidz and Flyby Promotions. I was not asked or required to review positively.

Simply written for the very young child and beautifully illustrated. We bought this for 5 year old autistic twins and they adore it.

Previewing for my baby, and feel this is an amazing children’s story. I think it’s great how it is written in very simple terms for little ones, yet even in these simplest of terms, still gives you that big full hearted feeling of warmth & happiness. I agree with the other reviewer who wished Jesus had also been mentioned in the book, but I still had to give this story 5 stars for the overall message of God’s love for us. :)

What an amazing story for your child! This was the first book my child learned to read! I love the images and the story! Great book to add to your child’s collection

Purchased as gift. Beautiful story.

I love this book! A perfect addition to any child's library.

Love this book so much I've bought it multiple times. Makes an excellent gift!

Way, way too vague. Very little is said about God's love...just that God loves the reader.

The Old Way of Seeing: How Architecture Lost Its Magic (and How to Get It Back), by Jonathan Hale

From Publishers Weekly

In a compelling manifesto that addresses the puzzlement of why new buildings are so often ugly compared to those of earlier eras, Hale, a Boston architect and critic, argues that until around 1830 virtually every building was designed as a composition of interrelated elements in accordance with an age-old tradition of harmony, geometry and adaptation of natural forms. Beginning with the Greek Revival, he contends, this intuitive way of seeing and designing was lost, leading ultimately to the pretension, blandness and downright unattractiveness of most modern architecture. While praising the Bauhaus as a valiant attempt to reintegrate time-honored aesthetic values into the industrialized world, Hale deems the modernist International Style a failure. He proposes Frank Lloyd Wright's organic style as a touchstone for architects seeking to create buildings that are alive and resonant with meaning. This impassioned essay, interspersed with social history, includes scores of photographs of buildings, some of which are overlaid with what Hale calls a pattern of "regulating lines" that fit the elements of the design into a proportional system. As he shows, "Whether the designer knew he was creating the pattern is less important than that the pattern is there." Illustrations. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Intended for the lay reader, this primer on design explores a number of interesting byways, from symbolism to scale, context, regulating lines, and pattern languages. Practiced New England architect and architectural writer Hale offers a paean to the past, more specifically a preindustrial past when, in his words, "one could walk down any street and be surrounded by harmonious buildings." It all began to fall apart in the 1830s, according to Hale, when the Greek Revival replaced substance with symbol. Hale revolts at the prospect of a rampant industrialism and everything else Modern Architecture implied: internationalism, uniformity, and universalism. Gentle, wise, and perceptive, he is a child of postmodernism. Recommended for public libraries.Peter Kaufman, Boston Architectural Ctr.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"Before the machine age, no one had to make the choice to be conscious of pattern, to be aesthetic." "A new building will not fill a gap if it does not come alive,..." This book explores, defines, illustrates where we've gone wrong, and occasionally where we've succeeded, since the early 1800's when it was a common skill subconsciously invoked to build with the patterns that bring a structure to life, make it beautiful, and pleasant to live in. It also provides a concise history of Architecture since 1800 that is in itself valuable to me, and it highlights the winners and losers through the last two centuries in the search to successfully build "places" instead of just sheds with decoration. Hale's defined and written about what I've been trying myself to formulate, and probably any reader of this review also is seeking. The cover says, "... (And how to get it back)" but don't expect a check list solution that works into a drawing review comment spreadsheet. You'll have to read it to see what the answer really is, sorry - you'll like the answer too!

This is a must-read fro anyone truly interested in the restoration of any 19thC building, and particularly anyone interested in not ruining their old house by installing the wrong new windows. I've bought this book for friends with old houses and they love it.

There is no other book that I know of that addresses directly the problem of the fact that much of contemporary architecture looks like *&*&%#. The book analyzes the reason for the problem and offers a coherent blueprint for how to bring back the charm of historic architecture into our modern buildings . I bought this copy as a gift for a woodworker friend as I felt he might find it useful.

It is not often that I am able to connect with other views that match my experience perfectly. "The Old Way of Seeing" explains why much architecture today leaves us cold, disheartened and abandoned.

Well described

Fantastic read. 20 years onward it's still highly relevant.

The first several pages of this book were good, and showedcomparisons of old and new buildings, and reinforced his premisethat missing regulating lines and the lack of attention to thearrangement of elements are responsible for much of thedecline in architectural quality. However, much of the rest of the book devolves into a disjointedgrabbag of architectural topics, along with comparisons of howthe human face or maple trees match the golden section with verylittle concrete in the way of design guidance or examples.I'm sure Hale is a good architect, and I would hire him in an instant,(especially after my architect put windows randomly all over our houseand didn't understand why I didn't want 4 styles of windows),but this book is poorly organized, doesn't make his point properly, and wanders far off topic.

Man's relationship to nature and the structures he builds. Worth reading on many levels.

Unless you're an experienced open source developer well-versed in Maven, the examples will not help. The code-heavy examples treat Camel more as an application development platform than an integration bus. There is, for example, minimal mention of SOAP, one of the most common messaging protocols. The emphasis on code leaves little room for non-code configuration options, which receive very little mention. With all the code, there is no detail on why or how a given component should be used, or any key features or options. In short, no practical advice. ..

Great examples. Used it as basis of an ESB class I was teaching

This is the most advanced book that I ever read about Camel. You can find very useful topics to use in your projects well.

Really solid examples of Camel's EIP patterns.

This book is seriously amazing. I've had the first edition for a long time, and found myself actually eagerly awaiting the release of the updated version. There is a ton of value in here even if you have the first, and even if you savy yourself a fairly competent camel developer.Everything the old book did, this one does a lot better...and the additional subjects are really helpful (specifically the microservices stuff). There is stuff in this book, and in the examples that are available for free on github, that you literally won't find adequately explained ANYWHERE else. In fact, if you pay close enough attention while troubleshooting camel stuff you'll see that the guy who writes this book (Claus) is actually the guy who answers or chimes in on the majority of camel questions on stackoverflow and the apache forums. He also seems very active in the apache sponsored chatroom that they link to on their site. I've had questions answered by him personally in there, and imagine if you needed clarification on any of the subjects in the book beyond the scope he covers them that it would be easy to get in personal contact with him and get further help. The example set on github is extremely helpful, there are a ton of test cases in there. I have already made great use of them, and they haven't even been available for all that long (at time of writing this). Even in the absence of the book, that is a must grab if you are developing any appreciable amount of camel code. Can't thank the author enough for this book, and all the help he provides to the community at large. I probably couldn't do my job without this stuff.

These days, there's so much material available online on any topic. But, there's no substitute for a good book like this one, to provide a proper grounding. Since it is written by the main developer on the Camel project, it is definitive on its facts. It does not assume that the reader already knows Camel. It is an introduction, but it also covers topics like error-handling, concurrency, and testing. The Camel website is the place to delve deeper into options and other such details, but this book provides the basis to know what you should be looking for.The recent second edition provides updates on some of the newer Camel features.

This book is the Apache Camel bible. If you are a newbie this is for you, if you an experienced Camel developer this is for you too. This book describe everything about Camel: testing, EIPs, components, microservices approach and so on. Absolutely a must have for everyone using Camel and more in general for everyone involved in Integration. Claus Ibsen is the project lead of Apache Camel, while Jonathan Anstey is a long time committer and PMC member, so reading this book and have this book always available for references and examples is worth for sure.Don't forget to take a look at the github repository with the code examples, useful to learn and test what you understood.
