This is at once a most erudite and easily readable book on what's happened to medicine after government began favoring managed care to ration unlimited demand for services following congressional passage of tax-subsidized insurance for 85% of the population in 1965. This was a point in time after which it appeared cheaper to pay for care with tax-subsidized dollars than with money. When insurance hid the real price of care, it appeared "free". Unrelenting cost inflation resulted for the fist time in over 80 years.Decades of rationing care to control cost inflation have not worked yet we are saddled with massive crony (government backed) corporate cartels empowered to ration care with mandated electronic "efficiency" and Big Data mining. Medicine has been decimated and cost inflation continues thanks to political malpractice.Twila Brase's book details how the government incrementally came to ration care. Policy makers could have instead of repealed the political cause of inflated demand: tax-subsidized insurance for "free care". Twila’s book exposes the lies and the bill of goods citizens were sold when HIPPA became law. HIPPA was sold as a privacy law when in fact, it is just the opposite. There is no privacy. Patient Rights pre-HIPPA have diminished. Obamacare has further eroded the wall of privacy a patient should have with a physician. Medical data is being accessed, shared, and used for research without the patient’s consent. Only Congress can take medicine back to a time when permission was needed for everyone to access a patient’s medical record. There is a volume of information in this book that everyone should read.
Highly informative book on the origins and meaning of HIPPA and its connection to EHRs. As a physician myself I really learned a lot of stuff that I did not know. I have advised all of my friends who are doctors and nurses to read this book.
This is a must read. It informs us of how the government and the insurance companies are ruling over our health. It is also practical in informing us how to respond to the endless questions that the doctors offices are REQUIRED (yes that is right, required) to ask. The book also helps doctors. You will learn doctors get penalized for many things one being not getting the required answers and another is recommending procedures that the 3rd party does not have on their list. Please READ
This book is outstanding! Twila has done a fantastic job of showing how the growth of data collection can affect the freedom of all Americans. I appreciated how she outlined the steps back to freedom. This is a must read for all Americans who are impacted more than we know by the health care system today.

This book gave me valuable insight into how my electronic medical records are being used, or how they could be used. I think everyone should check this book out!
I’m am just starting to read this book but it appears to be chock full of information for anyone who wants to get to speed on what the heck is going on in healthcare today. It is well written and vigorously researched. There is a timeline in the back that details all the major twists and turns in the US healthcare system. I will update my review when I’m done reading but so far, it’s a real winner!
