Review

"Anthony Powell once wrote of Robert Conquest that he had a 'capacity for taking enormous pains in relation to any enterprise in hand.' It is beyond dispute that, forty years after the publication of The Great Terror, this judgment requires no reassessment."--Michael Weiss, The New Criterion"The volume that tore the mask away from Stalinism before most people had even heard of Solzhenitsyn."--Christopher Hitchens, Wall Street Journal

It is very much worth while to read this "old" book (2008)--since it is the most readable and authoritative shifting of evidence as it became more available, decade by decade, ask the "Iron Curtain" rusted from within. Robert Conquest was a great hero of the Cold War, who died August 3, 2015. The weapons he wielded were exacting research and a mastery of expression that marked his many works of poetry, fiction, history, and politics. In the World War II years, some idealistic Americans found themselves "mugged by reality" and came to grasp the nature of the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, more people did. George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984, as well as Boris Pasternak’s Dr. Zhivago became touchstones. But do Americans know much about it now?Today, History Channel-type documentaries frequently cover the home-front abuses of Hitler’s Nazis (Jews, Gypsies, or churchmen); but there is very little portrayal of the malevolence of Stalin’s regime held for ordinary Russians. The slogan “Never Forget” evokes Jews under Hitler, not the deaths of at least 15 million Russians during Stalin’s Terror. The "darkness at noon"-type subject matter makes the book a bit unsettling, but it is highly readable and well worth the time.

I think this is far and away the most educational historical book I have ever read. The author really did his homework and references everything that can be referenced. Reading this will open your eyes on the history of the Bolshevik Revolution and the formation of the Soviet Union and then the long and brutal Stalin purges. And they are brutal. Be prepared for some tough reading. The only aspect left out of this book is the Jewish involvement in it all, which, considering the detail with which all else is documented, is rather surprising. Regardless, it's an incredible read that can leave on exhausted but well-educated.

A painful read for mainstream historians and those who worshipped FDR. How could the allies, Britain, France, USA, Canada, Poland, etc have been so blind as to choose and help a super murdering tyrant of Stalin and his team, against the racist NAZIs in 1939. No one accused the NAZIs of being mass murderers in 1939. And the few who exposed the Stalinists were ignored. This book gives a big “I told you so” from Hitler regarding how bad the Soviet Communist Empire was. As Patton said at the end of the war, we fought the wrong country. So, was FDR blind or mislead or corrupt? Who were his advisers? As McCarthy accused and was later vindicated, his advisers were secret communists themselves. The same with Britain, it was infected with secret communists also. Plus much of the main stream media was infected with secret Communists or their sympathizers. The so called “greatest Generation” was fooled, which makes this a painful read to them also.

In late 1918 Schumpeter, (quoted in “Prophet of Innovation” – McCraw) discussed the Bolshevik triumph in Russia with his companions: ‘Marxism would have a practical test’. “Weber replied that the result was likely to be catastrophic, because the Bolsheviks were so brutal”. No one offered any disagreement, and Weber, after more discussion, posited: “A laboratory heaped with human corpses!” (pg. 94).Precisely. Lenin, and then Stalin produced exactly that outcome. Followed by Mao, Pol Pot, and the Kims. Those Communist dictators (and there are no Communist rulers who are not dictators) who haven’t managed to murder most of their population are doing their best to drive them to, or keep them in poverty. Communism is a failure everywhere and every time it has been ‘enforced’ (it would not exist without ‘enforcement’).Conquest does a good job on a difficult subject, but even with his efforts, this is not an easy read. We are treated, on turning nearly every page, with sub-human viciousness, not to say bestiality, which pretty much defines the ‘experiments’ in Communist systems, whether they are attempted in Eur-Asia, the Far East, or the West; every one of them becomes a murder factory to some extent.Tony Judt, who is nobody’s idea of a “capitalist tool”, states in “Post War” (pg 561): “In light of twentieth-century history the state was beginning to look less like a solution than the problems, and not only or even primarily for economic reasons. What begins with centralized planning ends with centralized killing”. Just so; there has yet to be a counter example. The twenty-first century Communists have proven to be, in percentage, as deadly or worse.I did find it surprising that, early on, there existed some slight opposition to Stalin and that Stalin spent even a minute of his time making any attempt at all to provide some scintilla of legal justification for his mass-murders. But it quickly becomes clear that the opposition promptly ‘disappeared’ and whatever legal strictures were supposed to limit such murderous thuggery were then either ignored or changed by fiat. Any fantasy of a civilized USSR government is shown to be just that: A fantasy. My surprise is itself not surprising; such opposition was fleeting; worthless in the general murderous progression.Conquest guides us through the entire outrageous process, from scurrilous ‘accusation’, through arrest, then what is claimed to be ‘trial’, often enough resulting in an immediate bullet to the head. If you were ‘fortunate’ enough, you are jailed but with a good chance of a slow death there of starvation or thuggery. Or perhaps sent to the camps where you had a good chance of dying in transport, only to arrive and find circumstances as likely to kill you at your destination. Again, like the accusation and arrest, the cause of your death was as random, but much more likely, as getting hit by lightning; a huge number more died in the Terror than ever died by lightning. And a shot to the head may well have been the most humane result; I’ll admit to skimming over some of the descriptions of torture.Chapter 12, “The Great Trial”, should be an embarrassment not only to those in the West who were on-site observers, but to those who read such blatant nonsense and continued to fantasize that Communism was (and is) something other than the murderous thuggery it has always been; Stalin “won” the PR campaign because the “useful idiots” were only too happy to lie to themselves and others. There is no lack of reliable literature on the subject: Pipes – “The Russian Revolution”, and “Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime”, Applebaum – “Gulag: A History”. Even that apologist Figes - “A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution: 1891-1924”. And many, many more. Most all are authoritative, all are well supplied with footnotes and bibliographies but we still find pathetic apologists, hoping to salvage some gloss of decency for the horror of Communism, often claiming Conquest’s victim counts are wrong, and they do so by citing ‘new’ data, as if being ‘new’ were to automatically make it more accurate than what Conquest cites. It doesn’t. There is no reason to believe the ‘new’ numbers haven’t been equally fudged by other apologists, and the whole attempt stinks to high heaven: It’s as if, by citing some ‘new’ account claiming Hitler only directly murdered 5 million innocent people rather than 6 million, he is somehow less of a monster. We are lead through the final rounds of the horror, some bureaus purged several times over, until the incoming managers must have known that they were handed their death warrants; foreigners murdered in Russia, Russians murdered in foreign countries, the youth league terrorized into a ‘Stalinjugend’ (sic), until even Stalin realizes the inefficiency of it, never finding the least concern for the brutality of it. ‘The banality of evil’ was rarely so evidentConquest spends a good bit of the last chapter discussing the apologists of the time and attempting to explain the (sometimes admitted) denial of plain and obvious facts; he is far more generous than, for instance, those exposing Hitler’s supporters would be. The fantasies and lies of the Webbs, J-P.Sarte, Davies, Owen Lattimore, GBS, Durante, the French Communist press and more get a look lacking in deserved acrimony. The last several pages make it clear that Stalin’s bestiality were built into Communism from the start, and the attempts to ‘de-Stalinize’ while still being the USSR could only be cosmetic.Even now, well into the twenty-first century, you’re left wondering how long it will take for Russia to somehow outgrow that horrible, maiming disease it suffered for more than 70 years.A difficult but worthwhile read.

Lots of good information but very technical. I was glad to read about the food industry and how it is affecting our lives and health so I am able to protect my family. But, took a long time to read as it was not written for the average person.

While I think this is a good book for those who would like information on the different toxins, most of the results included do not include any brand names. It will just say "multivitamin" or "chlorella." I bought this book hoping for specific results or grades on different brands. I guess I will just have to rely on Consumer Lab for that. Most of the information in this book was pretty much information already known and talked about on Natural News and Dr Mercola's site. Overall not a terrible book but was definetly hoping for more!

Even though I consider myself to be quite well-versed regarding the defilement of the food supply, I still found the first part of this book to be mind-boggling and appalling. The corruption of our food has gone beyond even what I knew, and I think this fact speaks volumes about the future of humanity. But that aspect is beyond the scope of this book. What is within the scope of the book is detailed information about the defilement, mostly involving heavy metals, and the fact that even my organic food choices are not immune to this corruption. Sad and scary.I was disappointed, however, in the chart section of the book. For a lay-person like myself, who is not already well-versed in chemistry, this section seems quite confusing and difficult to decipher. I think some sort of rating system, using the A+ through F ratings that he mentions in the very beginning of that section, would be much more helpful to the average reader.

Disappointed, Mike didn't list brand names in a lot of the charts, or growers, just listed generic terms, so how are we going to know which items to avoid? We get much better specifics on the natural news website, ( Mike's original website)

Mike Adams is a national treasure. He has long been an advocate of natural health and healing -- a voice of reason and truth. This book explains the finer points of exactly what the problem is with the products we so cavalierly use -- and the dangers they may pose to our health. He details why certain ingredients are harmful. Then he charts the amounts of these harmful chemicals in actual products. Brilliant. Keep opening eyes, and up the excellent work Mike!

Finally, a food research scientist who is self-funded who tells the truth about what we call food today in this once great agricultural mecca. Astounding is the first word that comes to mind when confronted with the bare facts of how toxic the products in our grocery stores and restaurants are. They may look good and taste good, but they are not food. They are powerfully toxic, yet enticingly convenient products that we eat.The saddest part of all is that we are feeding our children this poison junk.In a very few short years we have dropped to a third world level sick care system, a third world level education indoctrination system, a third world type of oligarchical political system, and now we are virtually guaranteeing the mental and physical destruction of our future leaders by poisoning our children in yet another way. Thanks, Mike Adams for your courage.

There are two reasons Food Forensics is a scary book. The obvious one comes second: it is unbelievable how widespread toxic, fatal chemicals are. The first reason is that Mike Adams had to purchase his own ICP-MS lab equipment and have it professionally calibrated so that he could see how much of these toxic chemicals and metals are present in food, makeup, cans, bottles and plastic products. His lab is ISO-accredited. He did this because the information is not available anywhere else. He says we might find it bizarre the US government does not do this, and that he is the only reliable source. It is bizarre, period. In his lab, Adams has been analyzing thousands of products. He determines how much lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic they contain. Far too often, the answer is far too much. Thousands of times the legal maximums. But since no one is required to report those facts on labels, no one bothers to take the measurements. Ignorance is legal bliss. Things are so bad that cognitive deterioration is the new baseline, the new normal just for the living in the Anthropocene Era-The FDA used to be renowned for banning any chemical in food that might cause cancer. Now it rates how much of each carcinogen to allow in food.-“USDA Certified Organic” and “All Natural” permit the inclusion of hexane and acetone-Tests of 400 lipsticks showed lead in every single one-We are so used to lead poisoning our brains we consider cognitive decline in our older years normal-Arsenic pesticides in Washington state so saturated the soil that apple juice is loaded with it, 30 years after they stopped using it.-The majority of mercury pollution in the world comes from dental applications. Even cremating bodies releases mercury back into the biosphere.-Monsanto requested and received approval for up to 6000 ppm of Glyphosate (Roundup) in potatoes, and neither USDA nor FDA bother to test for it.-For FDA rules, half a gram of trans fats rounds DOWN to zero (“Contains no trans fats!”) for labeling purposes.-People with many chronic conditions showed improvement within two days of ending their intake of aspartame.-Children have far fewer ADHD issues when artificial food colorings are eliminated.-Biolsolids –recycled excrement - allows rejected toxins to re-enter plants and animals. The book is divided into sections, detailing the stories behind metals, and chemical compounds we live in. The last section of the book is actual test results, with large, worrying numbers. Unfortunately, Adams has chosen to hide brand names, so there might be ten examples of test results of the same product, but you have no idea what brands they might be. I would very much like to see his analysis of bottled waters, and am surprised he has no data to present. It looks more and more that Jack Lalanne was right: If Man made it, don’t take it.David Wineberg

This is a really excellent book. I rarely find a book on a particular subject that can't be beaten, but I doubt whether any book on the subject could be much better. This certainly beats the pants off the Trading For Dummies book that I also have in my possession and have read. You'll find that a lot of books of this kind contain a few useful ideas and then a lot of filler, but this isn't one of them. The chapters are well organized and every one of them is packed with relevant information and useful practical tips that anyone who wants to understand investing and short term trading will want to know. It also contains step by step instructions on when to buy and when to sell, what kind of profit to aim for, how to avoid losses, what proportion of your capital to invest, and a great deal more. There is a decent glossary, and a comprehensive index.Ms. Turner writes clearly, and although I find that occasionally her style is a little whimsical in an attempt to be entertaining, and reveals a kind of California hippy-dippy mentality this is only a very small minus. On the plus side, she is very good at explaining things that might seem very complex and technical in a very straight forward, albeit simplified way. I suspect she also has an excellent editor.I would like a little more explanation as to the actual mechanics of WHY resistance and support occur. Her analogy of a ball bouncing between a floor and a ceiling in a house, then penetrating a hole in the ceiling and going up to the next floor is OK as far as it goes, but simplifies a bit too much. If we stick with that analogy, one would like to know some possible reasons why holes appear in ceilings and floors. The example she includes from her own experience of trading in and out of Juniper networks during its course up from $20 to $240 and back down again is an excellent example of investor discipline as she makes several trades, each of which profits thousands of dollars, yet maintains trading discipline at all times when it would have been tempting to just let the stock run and run in the hope of making millions. For the basic investor who is perhaps disappointed with returns in a deferred compensation plan and wants to manage their finances more actively, this book is a lot of help. For example if one wanted to move from a cash position to fully invested in stocks for part of the year, she would gives you the tools you need to figure out the best way of timing that decision and hedging so that you have a chance to invest when the indexes are on a pullback or correction. Over the course of a few years, this could save you a fortune.Often the simplest ideas are useful for the newbie investor. For example not leaving a purchase order overnight, because a stock gapping up or down at the open may leave your plan in tatters. Or not buying after two or three successive up days. This probably isn't the only book you will ever need, but if it is your first one, it will put you on a very sound footing. Highly recommended.

Where do I even begin!? As a new trader, this book was priceless. I read William O’Neil’s book first “How to Make Money in Stocks” which introduced me to IBD. Then without knowing, Toni brings up IBD in multiple topics so everything just aligned perfectly. Toni breaks down the fundamentals of trading in a way that makes it incredibly easy to understand. The opening to every chapter was quite enlightening as well. Really helps you put “things” into perspective. The journey begins.....and I can’t wait to see where is leads

After buying roughly a dozen books on short term trading and technical analysis, I've concluded that this is likely the least useful. The information presented in the book is of no unique value. The author has a "Recommended Reading" section at the back of the book which is probably the best advice you'll take away from it.The rest is re-hashed information, much of it summarized and taken from the books she recommends reading. For example, she has a small section on candlestick charting techniques. If you want to learn about candlestick charting, read Steve Nisson's book(s).The cover of the book states "Maximize your profits in 3 days to 3 weeks". Then, near the beginning of the book she states: "I hate to pop your balloon, but if you trade for 50 weeks a year, and take in $1,000 per week . . . that's still 100 percent on your money. Most professional money managers turn downright giddy when they make 30 percent per annum. Add to that the fact that the rookie is just that--new to markets. While making 60 - 80 percent a year, year in and year out, is doable for experienced traders, it's extremely rare". She then goes on to say "Setting unrealistic goals is detrimental to self esteem"What's more, is she never discloses how much she has made herself. I've ran a high six-figure business online since 2007 and one thing I've learned is take advice from people who have the fruit on the tree. The fact that she doesn't disclose how much she's earned and that she's purposely trying to put a damper on hopes, tells me she probably isn't that successful herself. I suggest the author reads "Trade Like an O'Neil Deciple: How We Made 18,000% in the Stock Market" (fully audited claim, by the way) as well as "The Magic of Thinking Big".Past that, the author's style of writing is geared to the absolute beginner. Compared to the other books I've read, I feel like it would be most appropriate for someone aged 8 - 14 in the sense that she has to use so many long-winded analogies to explain the most elementary concepts. For example, prior support becoming resistance and prior resistance becoming support are very simple concepts to both explain and understand. She dedicated 4 pages to the mere description of what this means using mainly analogies. From the book: "Picture this. You're standing in the living room of a house, on the first floor. In your hands, you hold a ball. This ball equals the price of a stock. You toss the ball over your head. It soars upward, and hits the ceiling.".This goes on and on for the rest of the page. Just when you think it's over... on the next page: "Imagine yourself jumping on a trampoline. The trampoline supports you when you land on it, but the depth of your bounce varies a little each time. Also, just as heavier people stretch the trampoline base lower when they land..."I would argue if you need to imagine yourself jumping on a trampoline to understand a very, very simple concept within technical analysis -- you probably do not have the brain power needed to trade stocks short term. Why she explains everything like her readers are children or unintelligent, is beyond me. I mean no disrespect to the author -- I can see how badly she wanted her readers to understand these concepts without confusion -- but I think it was taken too far and it made for a poor reading experience on my end.Overall, if you're serious about making money in the stock market, there are so many other books better than this one.

This book was highly recommended by the guy who runs a penny stock chat room that I am a member of, so I bought it based on his recommendation. I had previously read High Probability Trading by Marcel Link, so some of this information is just a refresher. It's also a reminder to quit making the same mistakes that I have paid hundreds of dollars to not-quite-learn the hard way in the stock market. This book covers the nuts and bolts in more depth than Link's book, with a good description of resistance and support, which is the key to knowing when to enter and exit a trade. Highly recommended!
